First, post-1960s social conservatism — the bigger-than-the-religious-right tent that once included a lot of moderately religious fellow travelers — has collapsed back to its zealous core. On practically every issue save abortion, liberals won the culture war decisively, and religious conservatives awoke to find themselves strangers in their own country, dismissed as bigots from liberalism’s pulpits and stuck on the wrong side of 40-60 or 30-70 public-opinion splits.
But social liberalism’s sweeping victory produced new forms of backlash — less traditionalist and more populist, less religious and more rowdy, not sacred but profane. These forms of resistance take aim at liberalism’s own forms of social-justice sanctimony, which have smothered academic life and permeated notionally apolitical arenas from late-night comedy to sportswriting. The resisters don’t exactly have a program. Instead, they’ve got a posture — a “whaddya got?” rebellion against any rules that the new liberal order sets.
It is telling that it took a seeming defense of pederasty, a breach of the last taboo uniting our fractured culture, to make conservatives pay more attention to Milo’s own excesses than to the excesses he sets out to provoke.
And it will be equally telling, I suspect, when he finds a way to rebound from this setback, to escape shunning and find a willing right-wing audience again.
Milo would be a queer champion indeed for a cultural or religious conservatism confident in what it stands for and what kind of society it wants to build.
But for a cultural conservatism united only by a shared outsider sensibility, neither consistency nor propriety are consensus virtues any longer — and indecency in the service of attacking liberalism is no vice.

That said, the Left has had champions who make Milo Y look like a bleach-blond choir boy. Bill Clinton -- sexual predator. Hillary Clinton -- serial liar and sleazy crook. Chuck Rangel -- tax cheat and blowhard. Al Sharpton -- tax cheat and blowhard. Marion Barry -- drug addict and blowhard. Rod Blago -- perv. Anthony Weiner -- perv. Lena Dunham -- incestuous pedophile. And on and on. There is no ignominy so great in a Leftist that it can't be endured and even defended as long as the champ is devoted to The Cause.
Not so with the Right. At least we reject the most egregious offenders.

What makes conservatives different from liberals when they surrender to the liberal culture?
That’s the problem with Milo - once you abandon your core principles to be hip and cool, you’re defining deviancy up.

I will never accept liberal cultural values. That’s why I’m a conservative and reject Milo and everything he stands for.
Why? Someone has got to stand athwart history and yell “stop!”

Seems like he should do something outrageous like gay conversion/abstinence therapy and become a spokesperson for it and an advocate warning about the danger gay men pose to teens. That would make the social justice warriors have heart attacks.

I’ve been sort of an admmirer of Milo since he’s got the courage to go against the grain and stand up for our side. I tend to be tolerant of gays since I’ve been in the horse world and the design world...both with plenty of gays. But, the pedophilia thing is a bridge too far....we just can’t defend that.
Maybe he’ll recover from this, maybe he won’t. Unfortunately he did this to himself.

Take the government boot off the necks of the citizenry, then see how many issues were “won,” you liberal scumbags.
Conservatives today are not like the conservatives of even 10 or 20 years ago. The mainstream culture has moved left and so has conservatism. September 11th, the rise of the internet, and the fact that the economy crashed during a Republican administration and appeared to get better during a Democratic one have given social liberalism credence, in addition to the rise of a type of libertarianism as the default position of those on the right.
Muslims may or may not be an existential threat to the West, but the fact that they are identified as religious extremists has helped atheism be seen as a kinder and more rational path. The internet has desensitized everyone to all kinds of things even most mainstream liberals would have wanted banned as obscene in the 80s or early 90s. We are in the future we pretty much thought and feared we would get, only now most of us are the problem without realizing it. Either Western civilization thrives or at least endures and proves social conservatism isn’t necessary or it falls and proves us right but we aren’t in a position to point it out/gloat/ communicate the lessons learned.
I can’t say I can predict what will happen next, but I hope the outcome is a surprise, because if I go with what I think is going to happen, there isn’t much hope for a noble and honorable future for most of the west.

Frankly, the left has absolutely no business criticizing Milo on the pedophilia thing. We have that right, they don’t. Among the ranks of their heroes is far worse along the same lines.
I once said Milo coming to Tallahassee was the most exciting thing to happen there since Ted Bundy came to visit and some football team winning the national championship.
The oddest thing happened just before they went after him, all the media articles the left had normalizing pedophilia disappeared....
We can pat ourselves on the back while we lose the media war.
I think Homosexuals are mentally ill people, and I was aghast that segments of the conservative movement were embracing this one as a movement leader.
But now that it has been done, it is foolish to allow liberals to convince us to "take out" one of our soldiers. That is not how war works.
I am of the opinion that we should refuse to cooperate with Liberal efforts to delegitimize people on our side. The liberals *NEVER* apply ethic or moral standards to people on their side. They simply shut up and do not discuss such things. They close ranks and protect their creeps. (Like Barney Frank, who has done far worse than making a statement.)
A pretty basic aspect of war fighting is not doing what the enemy wants you to do. Our side shouldn't have picked this guy in the first place, but after it was done, we shouldn't have allowed him to be destroyed by the Liberal media. (Who absolutely love homosexual pedophiles all the rest of the time.)
