McCain, R-Ariz., said that having a free press is "a fundamental part of the new world order" when asked by NBC's "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd to respond to Trump's tweet that specifically calls out the New York Times, NBC and CNN as "fake news media."
"I hate the press, I hate you especially, but the fact is we need you, we need a free press," McCain said in a clip of the show released on Saturday. "If you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and sometimes adversarial press. Without it, I'm afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That's how dictators get started."
Todd asked McCain if he thought Trump was acting like a dictator with his tweet.

There’s nothing free about much of our press these days. It would be more appropriate to call them the Democrat Party Press or Leftist Press but there is nothing free about that. When it gets to the that point they are at, they cease being a press and become propagandists.
McCain knows this, he’s just using Alinsky tactics to try to keep people from seeing the truth about our “free” press.

I’m not sure why McCain would hate the press. The producers of the Sunday shows invite him on nearly every week, it seems, and they’ve been doing so for years. You’d think there weren’t dozens and dozens of other Republicans in Congress, because sometimes it seems the Sunday shows are only familiar with McCain and Lindsey, and a handful of other never-Trump types.
McCain is someone who bears watching. The folks in DC are starting to show their true colors.

Why is it necessary to have an “adversarial press?” IMO it should be enough that the press reports the news as accurately as possible. We do have an adversarial press but, with a few exceptions, it is the adversary of Republicans and/or conservatives.
