hile President Trump wavered Thursday on whether he will stop shielding from deportation people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children, his aides have identified at least two ways to quietly end their protections without his fingerprints.
An executive order has already been drafted to end the program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, that allows hundreds of thousands of the immigrants to live and work openly in the U.S. Trump used that legal mechanism to great fanfare to expand deportation authority and restrict entry to the U.S.
But with the president showing less willingness to sign such an order, advisors have begun to explore alternatives. Their hunt suggests that the White House is hesitant to publicly target a well-organized group of immigrants who have prominent public backing, including from President Obama, and to whom Trump has shown sympathy.

DACA is a very, very difficult subject for me, Trump conceded during a rambling East Room news conference Thursday, promising to address the issue with heart. Its one of the most difficult subjects I have because you have these incredible kids.
Trump is caught between two camps. His supporters count the end of deportation protections as a key component of his promise to strengthen immigration enforcement. In campaign speeches, Trump repeatedly promised to end the program on day one of his presidency and called the protections unconstitutional executive amnesty.
On the other side, a mix of stakeholders, including the 750,000 people who have won work permits, want to see even more immigrants allowed to come out of the shadows. And some Republican strategists are concerned that suspending DACA could energize Latino voters and liberal activists in key congressional districts during the midterm elections next year.

If he repeals DACA, people will start screaming at him, said Alfonso Aguilar....But senior Trump aides are holding fast to their goal of strengthening immigration enforcement, the presidents chief campaign promise. They have examined at least two options that would not directly involve Trump, according to two immigration policy advisors to the White House: a lawsuit brought by states, and new legal guidance that details who is a priority for deportation.
They are not "Dreamers." They are Illegal Invaders.
>>They are not “Dreamers.” They are Illegal Invaders. <<
Really they are children of Illegal Invaders. But that doesn’t change anything — evict the illegal invaders and their progeny.
Kids always suffer when parents break the law. We don’t NOT imprison people b/c they have kids.
So, they never say what the “two” things, are?
Obama’s dreamers turned out to be our nightmares.
Yes, adios is all the US should have to say to all illegals.
-—They have examined at least two options that would not directly involve Trump...-—
Maybe that’s not such a bad idea.
Whatever it takes, that’s what I say.
Fake News? It’s the LA Times.
The other, “prioritizing” the expulsion, is effectively already done.
What a stupid article.
All illegals, of any age and from every country, and rapugess, need to go and go fast. We really need a very effective wall - now.
In WWII, we built the 1700 mile Alaskan highway in less than 7 months, under harsh conditions, surely we can built an effective border fast today.
I had to read 2/3 of this article that as written as if it was absolute fact, until I finally came to this:
“according to two immigration policy advisors to the White House”
In other words, LAT is publishing rumor as fact - again - as usual.
And again, as usual, the fake stream media never calls the White House to ask for their comment. They just publish the rumor without attempting to verify it.
Of course it’s FAKE NEWS. From the LA Times. Just like the AP — cannot be trusted.
But they can decline to defend the agencies sued.
Imagine a hypothetical "President Rubio" or "President Jeb Bush" saying something like that. This forum would be unanimously demanding their crucifixion. And rightly so.
Don't waver, Mr. Trump! You were elected to clean out this rats' nest!
I thought 100,000 National Guard troops were going storm the country & round up the Dreamers.
That turned out to be Fake News. Too bad, really ... the idea has merit.
Why would he show his hand of cards?
I’m not wavering. He said he’d rescind it day 1. I for one want to hold him to it.
That's my point. I don't really care if he thinks they're "incredible kids" (whateverthehell that means) ... let them be "incredible" in the country in which they legally belong. DEPORT THEM.
The way Trump should play thos IMHO is to expose the fraud of the whole Dreamer thing. There are certainly a small number of valedictorians who were brought here as babies and have the moral character of angels, etc., but the left has been exploiting them as poster children for the legalizatiom of the other 20 million. If the left had been willing to settle for just them, they would’ve been legalized a decade ago. So Trump should and the GOP should just legalize the smallest possible interpretation of this group and take them off the table and deport everyone else without delay or hesitation.
