Violent protests over alleged police brutality that began in the mainly immigrant suburbs earlier this month spread to central Paris and other cities on Wednesday night and 49 people were arrested.
Clashes with police broke out after hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the Barbès-Rochechouart area, near the Gare du Nord railway station, where the Eurostar terminal is located, and the Sacré Coeur basilica in Montmartre, a favourite with tourists.
Police fired tear gas to disperse about 400 protesters, but smaller groups then went on a rampage in other parts of the capital, smashing windows and overturning dustbins in near Place de la République and in the Marais, another popular area for holidaymakers.
For many French people, the poverty-stricken suburbs of Paris, plagued by crime and high unemployment, are no-go areas.
Police complain that they frequently face attacks by highly organised drugs gangs.

My sympathies to the good people of Paris who have to put up with this dangerous environment.
A giant campaign ad for Le Pen.
Sacré Coeur basilica in Montmartre
My favorite church building, had 50 euros stolen there once, tough neighborhood down the hill.
There go those planes full of wealthy Chinese Tour groups. Many of them will fly over France and chose other countries to spend their money in. Places like Russia, or the Czech city of Prague will seem safer, and get more visitors.
Spent some time in the Marais a few years ago. Sounds like the riots might have been right outside my windows, if I still had windows.
When I went to Paris last year, at times I thought I was in Beijing, there were so many Chinese tourists there.
The best ads are the ones money cannot buy...
Soros paid for this too.
Arrested and then....given a million euros to be...NICER
Prague is a much nicer city than Paris.
I will tell you this about the French, when they are done they are done. This interferes with tourism they will load all those people up and dump them in their homeland. I expect LaPen to win.
I hear that China has offered it’s law enforcement services to France as a way of keeping Paris safe for it’s touring groups. That’s how interconnected the economies are, and how well known the Parisian problems of invasion are.
If Monsieur Hollande was in office when the offer was made, he probably (rudely) turned it down. French pride being what it is.
Same goes for Krakow and Budapest.
I hope to travel there someday and see for myself. I want to see the Cathedrals before the taliban-wanna-bes destroy it all.
My sympathies to the good people of Paris who have to put up with this dangerous environment.
...
Most of the good people in France are outside of Paris in the rural areas.
What strikes me as uusual about this is here in the US, the geographical roles are reversed.
The suburbs are where it’s (usually) safe and the inner city is where the crime is at.
They will be released after they say that they are muzzies.
The riots are proof there are no good people of Paris
all that remain are fools
What a tragedy... the once beautiful and alluring Paris has become a huge Muslim nightmare and tourist "no go" destination.
