President Trump's first choice to succeed the departed Michael Flynn as national security adviser has turned the job down due to family reasons, sources close to the situation told Fox News late Thursday.
One source told Fox that retired Navy Vice Admiral Robert Harward "really wanted" to do the job, but ultimately decided that he could not.
A senior administration official said that Harward's acceptance of the national security adviser post was contingent on the agreement of his family. The official said Harward's wife and other family members wanted him to remain in the private sector.
Harward retired from the Navy in 2013 after a career spanning nearly 40 years. Upon his retirement, he became chief executive officer for defense and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin in the United Arab Emirates.
There was no official comment from the White House. Harward had been due to meet with Trump Thursday night.
At a news conference earlier Thursday, the president said he had "somebody that I think will be outstanding for the position" of national security adviser, but did not mention any names.
A former Navy SEAL, Harward served as deputy commander of the United States Central Command under Gen. James Mattis, who is now defense secretary. He quickly emerged as the favorite to replace Flynn after the latter resigned Monday night, ending days of speculation about his fate following reports that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other officials about his discussions with Russia prior to Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration.

Or has a skeleton he doesn’t want walking out of the closet.
Not buying this...yet.
Second version of why he turned it down; the first being he wanted his own team. I’m more inclined to believe the first version, but we’ll never know for sure.
I wasn’t exactly a three star flag officer, but I’ll take it. I watched more than one general work at close range...
That’s what I’m thinking.
I’d love to know who leaked this.
I’m sick of watching some d-head or another spill state secrets.
I hope Harward does take the job.
If he doesn’t, Trump will find another person to implement his vision.
Sounds like the little woman put her Pink-Pussyhat on and thumbs down.
Next nominee, we should not even know about it until all this kitchen table vetting has already taken place. This was a waste of two days time.
I don’t believe that. No one takes such an important job, then turns it down. Someone in his admin is sabotaging Trump. First Flynn, now this guy.
We should be most appreciative of all who do accept. I am amazed at how many patriots there are who are putting country before self. I am just sorry that Harward's name was put out to the media before he was sure he would take it.
The President is with you.
I grabbed one of my cats yesterday...not appreciated until I served up some "Mariner's Catch"...
Col Allen West swas a name someone suggested earlier
Harwood is an American hero. He won't damage the Presidency.
Screw it. Jam Petraeus through.
Hey Eddie.. I’m o-dome from the dish forum so you’ll know my handle on FR. I agree with your skeleton theory. Too bad. Bring in Jack Keane.
I like West, but I seldom see him as favorably as others do.
Now that may be my shortcoming. I just don’t see him as the high level political vice-president type that others do. (I don’t mean actual Vice-President here, but more like one of a number of vice-presidents in a corporate structure.)
I do believe he provides good value to us, so this shouldn’t been seen as my thinking he isn’t one with us.
These cabinet positions require a very top level guy to fill them. Perhaps I’m selling West short. That’s not my intent, but it’s a possibility.
From what I’ve read, I’d have to agree with you.
I had high hopes for him. Lets hope this was fake news.
I’d hate to think a wife and other family members would deny him this position. That would be very selfish IMO.
He’s a good man, and should be allowed to operate at his full potential.
We need good men like him. The nation does.
It’s all on the line folks.

Yes - I would love to see him in that job and watch the press and demoncraps twist themselves into knots bitching about it.
Ben Carson hasn’t been confirmed yet - he should be complaining that he’s been put at the end of the line because he’s black - that’s what a black congressman complained about in one of the confirmation hearings. “Why am I the last one to ask questions?” Poor baby!!!
Yeah - it was because you were black, you jerk!
