BIG SUR, Calif. Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in Big Sur is starting to fail.
According to CalTrans an active slide has been taking place on the mountainside under the bridge since Saturday. The slide is moving one of two column holding the bridge up and cracks are visible at the top of the post. "Basically the mountainside that it is sitting on is moving, which, causes the column to move," said Heath Johnston with CalTrans.
The problem has the bridge closed to all vehicle traffic and California Highway Patrol is turning people around at Big Sur Station.

Here is a really radical idea........don’t send one more penny out of this country (OUR money) until roads, bridges, roads, pipes, buildings, etc. are fixed, repaired, replaced or restored.
Not. One. Cent.
I used to work for a company that made a product that would do just that. One of them was a liquid epoxy that you would dip sheets of Kevlar or some sort of carbon fiber in, then wrap the post.
I’m sure there are engineering standards for how many wraps and how long to do the repair.
This stuff was strong. We once made a single sheet about 4” wide and 12” long. We suspended it between two Coke cans and I stood on it with one foot. I weigh 200 lbs. It’s held.
I used to love riding my motorcycle on the PCH.
Wrong bridge.
Note the square columns on you bridge and the round columns on the failing bridge.
Who needs this bridge when you can take a bullet train?
Yes, thank you for the pictures! With my fear of heights, I would have been nervous driving over that bridge without knowing it had structural problems.
No worries about the wrong pics, my post still applies. :)
My take exactly...
Love that drive. Actually, I love PCH in Southern Cal too.
Probably they were issued tablets so they can watch porn while “working”.
Well I am glad that I drove that whole highway for the first time about six weeks ago. LA up to Santa Barbara — San Luis Obispo — Half Moon Bay — San Fran.
Wonderful scenery, wonderful people, insane culture, criminal government.
Duct tape ought to take care of it.
I definitely would not volunteer to go down and take the next picture!
lol. We need a train for the fruitcakes first!
I definitely would not volunteer to go down and take the next picture!
I think the only thing holding up that pylon at this point is the rebar.
Perhaps they can use virtue signaling, transgender rights and political resistance to repair it.
There is, or was, an ice cream joint just south of Ragged Point on PCH 1.
That road is one of the scariest I’ve ever driven with the kids in the car, as oncoming cars rounding the curves would frequently swerve over the line.
The kids would scream, unnerving me even more.
Soon they’d all scream for ice cream and we’d have to stop.
I totally understand, California is a swamp, I know I live here.
But this bridge was a product of a better time in California.
I have done this road 20+ times over the years(motor bikes) and this bridge is just breathtaking every time.
On my scale of value this is equal to part of Mt Rushmore.
Pfeiffer Canyon in better days.
Where in that bridge is a round column?
