I’m in Bakersfield, below Lake Isabella, which is earthen and not many years ago, was found to have problems. They keep at at a reduced level.

They want them to go north.

They are saving the southern route for Sacramento.

Some black humor from KCRA chat: “Homes downstream need to open up to take in these undocumented waters.”

That live streaming on the KCRA 3 link is doing a great job of showing the magnitude of this near disaster.

Here comes an opportunity for negotiation. Trump says... “You want some federal disaster funds? I want you to end sanctuary cities. Let’s make a deal.”

I am in extreme agreement with that. He doesn't have California anyway. It's a no lose situation.

“All of Yuba County Ordered to Evacuate Immediately.”

The real headline says only lower levels of county.

They better get the U-2’s out of Beale and any other assorted intelligence aircraft.

Thank you! Mom’s okay, she no longer lives there. But I’m sad for whoever bought that property.

I’m not sure if the flooding will reach Rio Oso, but the Bear River is a tributary of the Feather River so it might get bad. It’s in Sutter county, just south of Yuma/Marysville, and portions of that county have been ordered evacuated.

“”Word is that there is secret video showing President Trump personally using a shovel to damage the spillway and laughing hysterically.””

And I heard that he had Putin fly in to help him. Scoundrels!

I already declared California a Water Sanctuary State a day or so ago.

I was just talking to my Mom about that, wondering if they could go south or maybe head up higher into the Sierras to get above the dam?

I have to look at a map.

Everything is negotiable. Just needs an executive order or two. Drag it out through court for a while. And since California is contemplating caliexit.... it would be improper to spend federal funds on a region that may soon not even be part of the United States.

Then there is the whole can persons in this country illegally receive federal disaster funds given from the federal government to a state? That would need to go through court and be tested as well.

My wife and I taught for many years in Marysville. Marysville( below sea level) is protected from three rivers the Yuba, Feather, and Sacramento by dikes that don’t get the maintenance they really need. It will be a major disaster, God willing the dam will hold and all will be safe. Prayers up for all, especially my old parish, Saint Joseph in Marysville.

Most earthen dams are made from fill dirt and rocks to a large extent. This water is washing the dirt and smaller rocks downstream.

The main spillway is the chute with the hole. The auxillary/emergency spillway is to the left of it, above the road and the winding trail down the hill. That emergency spillway is right down being overtopped, the roadway is gone and the hillside eroding. That is the one they are saying will(?) fail - it is about 30 feet tall, so it will release 30’ of the water.

The press conference right now sounds like that spillway failure is not imminent.

I just saw a twitter feed. Showed two lanes of highway jammed trying to get out. Lanes coming in were empty.

That's nuts. I'd probably be one of those guys who said, "Screw this!", and jumped the median.

Should I ask why people live in these areas that could flood?

No, because (no offense intended-really!) it's a dumb question. It's like asking why people could live where there could be bad weather or earthquakes or liberals. Just facts of life. Nowhere is 100% safe from disaster. Given the mountainous but dry-ish nature of much of the west, there's an enormous number of reservoirs to catch water. Practical considerations mean they tend to be concentrated in the mountains, while other practical considerations mean the towns (which are generally older than the dams)) are mostly downstream of the mountains. The only way to avoid this situation would be to abandon the western third of the United States. In making this statement I'm exaggerating surprisingly little. It just is what it is- part of living in the west. A better question would be why do people in California keep voting for idiots who'd rather spend money on solar panels and high speed rail moonshot projects than on maintaining critical infrastructure that kills people when it breaks.

The Evacuation is in full swing.
