The California Department of Water Resources issued a sudden evacuation order shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday for residents near the Oroville Dam in northern California, warning that the dam’s emergency spillway would fail in the next 60 minutes.

The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.

Just reviewed the latest Weather Service forecast. The storm flow was delayed from the initial arrival time that is good. Bad news is it is going to rain and snow in the FR basin in epic amounts. If I lived downstream from the dam I would plan on being out by Monday am.

Wow! The damage has really spread. For those that don’t know the spillway was 180’ wide and 3,000’ long. Those boulders at the bottom are car - large car sized.

that tree and group of bushes on the left is a an island now..

I suspect the roots are slowing erosion but its just a matter of time

I think the spray blowing north is creating runoff hence that new muddy stream...going around that island and downhill

how much it is eating uphill is key....

Yes if the water causes the spillway to collapse any where near the gates all bets are off.

It’s because of the “hump” in the spillway.

here is the video they, DWR, released taken what looks like yesterday afternoon ..towards the end they flyover the main spillway with reduced flows

but suspiciously, it cuts off before we can see how the upper part of the main spillway is doing

They've got the reservoir down to the normal "wet" season level now .
Will be interesting to see how much of a cushion they allow for the damaged flood spillway.

Government severely misjudged strength of Oroville emergency spillway, sparking a crisis

2/19/17

Bill Croyle stood in front of an aerial photo of Lake Oroville and swept his hand across the top of the emergency spillway that was helping drain water out of the brimming reservoir.

“Solid rock. All this is rock,” Croyle, acting director of the Department of Water Resources, said with an air of confidence at the Feb. 11 briefing.

(snip)

Soft bedrock is not the only problem, he added. The concrete weir at the top of the emergency spillway was “just plopped on top of that ridge. It’s a design area that will probably get a lot of scrutiny and had to be a major concern as [the spillway] was eroding up the hill.”

Vogel confirmed that the weir, which she said ranges in height from 25 feet to 45 feet, was not anchored.

As to why the state never moved transmission lines that cross both spillways and connect the dam powerhouse to the electrical grid, Vogel said, “The main spillway performed well for the past 50 years, so there was no perceived need to relocate.”

The emergency spill way is not anchored?

Astounding!

I caught that gem buried towards the end of today's LAT article!!

This image shows just how many people Oroville provides water to—and why the lake's near-rupture is a very big deal (wired.com)
