[snip] CARRBORO, North Carolina (WTVD) -- A mother is hoping police press charges against a daycare worker she says was caught on surveillance video breastfeeding her child without her permission.

Oxendine said moments after she left the room, video shows the daycare worker picking up her baby and breastfeeding him for several seconds. The woman stopped when another worker who was in the room at the time, stood up to leave.

Later Friday evening, Oxendine rushed her baby to UNC Hospital because she said he became ill and was throwing up.

Her son was born prematurely, is lactose intolerant and can't have any milk products.

Oxendine is a common name in Scotland county as well as Robeson county, North Carolina. My youngest brother used to do construction work in the area and he used to refer to the LOF (Libby, Owens, Ford) plant as “Locklear, Oxendine and Friends” because most of the employees there were said to be named either Locklear or Oxendine.”

I have been under the impression that Oxendine came from Scotland but maybe it is English. Most Oxendines are more than sixty percent “native American”, specifically Lumbee indian.

Do you have children? What would your reaction be?

The mom told the daycare worker TWICE NOT to breastfeed her baby. That is reasonable and her prerogative. The daycare worker disregarded the direct wishes of the mother...Child ended up in ER...lactose intolerant.

No one said anything about a lawyer; however, at the VERY LEAST, the child’s ER and medical bills should be paid (Substantial as anything is done in ER is...”$500 to walk thru the door” is what I was told.).

Frankly, I would be mortified and outraged if some daycare worker disregarded my wishes and decided to breastfeed one of my children...and they are not lactose intolerant. I have never heard of such a thing! It is outrageous!!!

(Oh and wet nursing is entirely different situation.)

One evening my 18 year old daughter was driving a car in the right lane; an oncoming car swerved across 4 lanes of traffic and smashed into my daughter’s front bumper and driver side panel...Daughter drove up on the curb and snow drift to try to avoid the accident...She had some injuries and her swim season and nomination to a service academy were impacted. Luckily she is not a paraplegic or worse.

Driver was drunk and attempted to leave the scene and later blamed accident on my daughter...

There are children who are actually allergic to ingredients in cow's milk, which the breast donor may have ingested. I have personal experience with children with food allergies, and the onset is rapid and very alarming. Surely you have heard of adults who have shellfish allergies having to get atropine shots in a restaurant after unwittingly having some shrimp or lobster in a soup or salad. Tiny children with food allergies can be even more reactive.

Don’t you think you are painting with a rather broad brush here? Life situations can change sometimes...We don’t know the circumstances of the mom and her family...Frankly, some moms have to work...What if the baby was a surprise blessing??? Would it not be better to have the baby in daycare and work it out rather than decide baby is is inconvenient mistake like Obama would say...:(

I think the mom exercised reasonable judgement by taking her baby to a highly rated daycare. Perhaps she should have reported the daycare worker’s odd suggestion to the supervisor, but as a first-time mom, maybe she just did not see the red flag on that.

I stayed home with my 3; however, there were times when I took one or both to part-time daycare for my appointments, etc... We moved frequently, so we did not have lots of dear, close friends or family upon whom to rely. It is called life, and I would have been mortified had some woman breastfed my child. I checked the daycare centers out and thought they were good—often church related. Luckily no problems.

My son was in grad school—finishing his PhD took forever. His wife felt it was time to have children; being a PA, she knows the ramifications of birth after 30. Soo yeah, they had a baby.

She was the breadwinner and made good money tho she had sizeable student loans. Sooo for a short period of time, baby was in daycare...until son finished...Mom is home now with her 2 children~third due any day :) These days, it is difficult to be stay at home mom~they are lucky, though they likely still have some debt.

Fact that a mom has to work and trust child to another does not mean they are not a good mom, don’t love their children, or that it would be OK for child to be breastfed by a daycare worker.

Your story is great and congratulations to you and your offspring. Seems you were an active, participating father in the home; old school.

Thank you, I greatly credit my wife and the example she was able to set for them. She joined my consulting firm 15 years ago, both as a product developer in the laboratory we built in our home, and also serving as the Secretary-Treasurer of my firm.

The beauty of working from home, as we both do, is that when the kids came home from middle and high school, we were often both there (when I wasn't travelling on client business). Our strategy as parents was based on the premise that there was far more value to be accorded to the kids to have parents at home, and available when they were in high school as opposed to when they were in diapers.

And that's where donna's point is most applicable, "They accomplished all that under the direct supervision of others. Their values and characteristics are those of their caretakers." We selected their early caretakers, and we were both there for them at the time when it really mattered.

(Btw, if you dislike being judged, why do you so judge others - self righteous, standing in judgement [sic.], without charity...?)

You must have missed it in my last post when I said, "For those on this board who continue to stand in judgment, I invite you to go ahead and do so." Doesn't really sound like someone who doesn't like being judged, does, it? Quite the opposite, actually. I welcome it.

What I learned how to do years ago was to dispatch with the critics and not care what self-righteous, self-styled judges said. More often than not they hadn't accomplished anything particularly meaningful in their own lives, but they derived what little misplaced importance they thought they had from standing in judgment of me and others.

We now have second generation day care-raised adults as parents. It is social experiment producing bitter fruits. God help us.

I believe I have handily put the lie to this incorrect and overly broad assumption. God has both helped us and blessed our family richly in spite of all the detractors who at the time thought they knew so much.

I challenged your false assumption with my own story: "Why have a baby if you’re going to let strangers raise him?"

My wife and I have done it the Biblical way: we are not divorced, and our kids are well adjusted Christians who have successfully launched their own careers.

We're hardly "elites" My kids are all public school and public college educated, not preppies or ivy leaguers. The boys' college was GI bill, my daughters worked and were debt free coming out of college. My daughter took out a loan to pay for her Master's degree.

The kids learned how to manage money, and when we paid off our house early by paying down extra principal, I like to think they learned something from that. I have built a successful business over the last 21 years; I suspect at least one of my "day care babies" will do the same some day.

If what we did as average people was successful, why must I be forced by anyone to imagine failure?

Those who criticized the path my wife and I took in rearing our children beginning with our choice to use day care when they were very young are today - unsurprisingly - not in a position to claim similar successes with their own families or their finances.

We all make our choices. I'll always stand ready to be judged according to choices I've made.

I am certainly ready to be judged, wordsmith. You assume much (a little judgement there). Sorry you’ve such a tender spot about letting others care for your children. Many do. I worked very hard, sacrificed personal wants, and lived smaller (think 50’s style) to have a single income family with a full time Mom. My kids are great, and low on materialism (which I believe often drives two incomes).
