WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump said he respects Vladimir Putin, and when an interviewer called the Russian leader "a killer," Trump said the United States has many of them.
"What do you think? Our country's so innocent?" he told Fox's Bill O'Reilly in an excerpt released by the network. The president's interview was to air Sunday afternoon on the Super Bowl pregame show.
Trump has long expressed a wish for better ties with Moscow, praised Putin and signaled that U.S.-Russia relations could be in line for a makeover, even after U.S. intelligence agencies determined that Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign to help Trump win against Democrat Hillary Clinton. Putin has called Trump a "very bright and talented man."
During Putin's years in power, a number of prominent Russian opposition figures and journalists have been killed.
In the interview, Trump says, "I do respect him," and then is asked why.
"I respect a lot of people, but that doesn't mean I'm going to get along with him. He's a leader of his country. I say it's better to get along with Russia than not. And if Russia helps us in the fight against ISIS, which is a major fight, and Islamic terrorism all over the world that's a good thing," Trump said, using an acronym for the Islamic State group. "Will I get along with him? I have no idea."
O'Reilly then said about Putin: "But he's a killer, though. Putin's a killer."
Trump responded: "There are a lot of killers. We've got a lot of killers. What do you think? Our country's so innocent?"

Except that Hillary announced she had Ghadaffi murdered and laughed about it. I agree with your sentiment but a fact is a fact.

I think war might have been what was meant, but it could be other things, too. But national interests have seen people killed for just about every nation in history. Would we assume our clandestine operations have not done so?
I wouldn’t read too much into it...not running down his country.
He is savvy enough likely to be thinking of Clinton, all the dems and rinos who have caused so many Bengazi folks to die, countless middle eastern Christians, and think of horseback took money from Soros...all those rinos...and the propagate...
We destabilized most of the middle east. This has flooded Europe with Muslims, led to the rise of ISIS, and could lead to a wider disastrous war. Tens of thousands have dies because of stupid policies this nation put into play with the last president.
But yeah, we ought to shut up and not say that after 8 years of bitching about it when Obama and Hillary were doing it.
Believe me, I don’t feel “run down” by him saying it.
Now if you want to own the past 8 years of screw up because you think it’s patriotic, then go right ahead.
I applaud DJT for his comment. I don’t necessarily like some of our foreign policy “initiatives” but I also eat my green beans. My observation is that it’s not the temperature of the kitchen so much as if we wish to savor the meal, don’t be too curious about any stage of it’s preparation. Then there’s the truth in the old saying about the similarities in how politics and sausage are made.
This is what Trump is talking about;

Obama and Hillary burning down the gulf states creating huge migrant problem.
And you are naive if you think what he said is not true.
I would rather have truth any day, over any flavor of BS.
When DJT said this I first thought of Patrice Lumumba, followed quickly to our nation building follies.
Remember when the Republican twerp from Florida questioned Rex Tillerson, his better, whether Bad Vlad was a War Criminal?
Well, Rex is now Secretary of State, and Little Marco is still the twerp from Florida!
There is a reason why Rex can pay his bills, but Little Marco can't. Could it be that Rex is competent, but Marco is a grandstanding politician?
We all want to be patriotic. But let’s be honest. Our actions in Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Syria (etc) have led to the deaths of many, at the behest of causes that have nothing to do with who we want to be. First step in reaching our goals is keeping it real.
I haven’t seen a Democrat talk that much sense in forever.
Not to mention Kosovo and Clinton’s criminal bombing of Serbia.
Michael Corleone:I’m working for my father now Kay. He’s been sick, very sick.
Kay Adams:But you’re not like him Michael. I thought you weren’t going to become a man like your father. That’s what you told me.
Michael Corleone: My father is no different than any other powerful man, any man who is responsible for other people, like a senator or a president.
Kay Adams:You know how naive you sound?
Michael Corleone:Why?
Kay Adams: Senators and presidents don’t have men killed.
Michael Corleone: Oh. Who’s being naive, Kay?
I thought of that scene, too.
Well, let’s talk about our nation’s foreign policies for a bit. Our government orders tens of thousands of people killed in the Middle East, with no declared war. We aren’t all that innocent as a nation. Any sane person who isn’t all that partisan acknowledges this.
Yep, but she can be pretty dumb too. She was #noDAPL. Actually went to the camp in ND.
