I am arguing with a liberal (yes I know its futile)
I think Obama did this Australia refugee deal just to mess trump up after he left, but that could only be the case if the turnbull refugee deal was AFTER the election. All I can find in the news is that it was November. Not the exact date.
Anybody got a date and a link on that?
thanks in advance.
thanks in advance.
Nov 13 2016, After election result.
It was announced after the election around the 13th November but had been negotiated before that. Negotiations had probably began by February, but there doesn’t seem to be any information around about when the deal was actually made.
A thread further down here said Turnbull announced the deal on November 13.
Apparently Turnbull has a perfect island for refugee settlement. Britain and the US have plenty of islands, too. Refugees should all be sent there pending the citizenship process. None of this is hard.
The majority of the detainees come from the Middle East and South Asia, with Iran and Afghanistan providing the bulk of the refugees.
If it was negotiated before the election, that does seem to indicate that O knew it would be unpopular and cost the dems votes. That tells me the deal is a poison pill. One can’t help but wonder if the Yemen attack and who knows what else was put in place by 0.
I swear I am not making this up: I heard read somewhere about the Obama - Turnbull agreement months ago . . . well before the (wonderful) election.
You might want to note that Turnbull is from the Liberal Party of Australia. He’s stuck because roughly three-quarters of Australia favor the tough-entry program that Australia maintains, and there are several thousand on these island refugee camps which Australia will not accept. No one else in the Pacific will take the refugees back....so it’s a fairly negative position.
The fact that this was worked out as a favor by Obama to Turnbull...makes it a fairly humorous deal with nothing to be gained by the US. I think if you went to actual Australia citizens....they’d say that Trump is right, and Turnbull is wrong. I’ve yet to see any US network go and ask the typical Australian on the street about their opinion.
The refugee resettlement process in general is insane from the perspective of U.S. citizens.
The Farallon Islands, 26 miles west of San Francisco, would be nice.
Lots of seal and sea gull to eat.
There are PLENTY of places to “process” these “immigrants” besides mainland America. Mainland Britain as well.
Trump should tell Turnbull to keep his refugees over there and we’ll send him blankets and CARE packages. We’ll do a flyover over the island and drop down food packages.
Good points. IMO Trump should have said no to the deal. That that deal was made with the previous pres and time expired when he left.
But I guess he felt stuck and didn’t want to renege. I don;t blame him for it at all though. this is obama’s fault.
Trump should renegotiate this deal or else Obama and Turnbull made a pushover out of him. I could use another word but the comment might get pulled.
Thank you to everyone for your replies.
