Like the talk of secession in conservative southern states after Barack Obama became president, the idea of a separate California Republic builds on long-standing separatist feelings amplified by a momentous national election. Since Donald Trump became president while securing less than a third of the vote in California, the Yes California campaign — a.k.a. Calexit — has gotten a lot of attention and perhaps even some momentum in getting an initial measure placed on 2018 general election ballot. An estimated 7,000 volunteers have begun amassing the 585,407 signatures necessary to place a constitutional amendment on the 2018 ballot deleting the state’s adherence to the United States and authorizing a 2019 referendum on independence.
The arguments for Calexit are pretty simple: The state is drifting ever-further away from the rest of the country in cultural attitudes and public policies, especially with respect to immigration and the environment. California’s size and wealth (its GDP is similar to that of France) make it the one state that might make a go of it alone.
It is also a “donor state” when it comes to the relationship of federal taxes collected from Californians to the federal spending conducted there; one recent analysis showed California ranking 46th among the states in relative dependence on Washington.
But it’s clear the main reason for sudden interest in Calexit is Donald J. Trump, and the possibility a federal Republican regime under his direction would preempt California preferences on a wide range of issues. Even though Governor Jerry Brown and other statewide Democratic elected officials have kept their distance from Calexit, the saber-rattling they have conducted about the state’s willingness to fight Trump and the GOP in court has undoubtedly fed the Calexit sentiment. The northern portion of California and a section of South Oregon are trying to form a new stare called jefferson due to lack of representatives in the Liberal governments.
All 31 military bases will be removed... the fact the military presence is responsible for 20% of San Diego’s job base hasn’t hit home with those clowns.
With West Virginia as ample precedent.

We’ll see how that holds up once all 31 US military bases are repositioned eastward.

Jefferson does not need or want pot income. Moonbeam takes far more taxes out of the rural counties tan he puts in. He milks the conservative sections of the state like a starving cow to support his illegal immigrant voting scheme.

CA is a one party commie sate. Any chance we’ll find illegal alien voting, dead people voting, people voting multiple times, voter machine tampering?
The lefties so much resist any investigation because they know there will be a lot of fraud and the potential for charges. There will also be an electoral re-alignment and distribution of federal funds because there will be fewer citizens on the voters rolls as well as fewer people in the state census.
They can’t do anything right.
Would love splitting California in half, but only if I get to go with the Northern half. I am in the middle of the state, so the split could be dicey. I would also applaud t California thereafter having less clout in future Presidential elections.
America should punish Mexico by seize all of the west coast of Mexico and east to the continental divide. America already has half of the Mexican people so we might as will have the land too.

It seems that the loss of California as a monolithic democrat bloc would still negatively impact democrats, wouldn't it?
If California's 53 congressional seats were allocated to the remaining states based on population some would go to red states and swing states.
Jefferson is very conservative. And quite active by the way. In the last couple of years the county seats voted to support the move. It is also growing fast, it is hard to find an updated map that includes all the counties that have signed on lately.

Give all of Mexico a vote in the US election. Wonder how that would go?
Unless we intend to imprison a lot of people i don’t think that would work.
Electorally, their constitution is winner take all I think. But there is a significant portion of CA outside the loser coast areas where illegals and no-goods live. Most of the inlanders and high desert residents are decent people I’d imagine.
The last I read, it was 51% “Hispanic” to 49% other. Be interesting to see if Trump can enforce the deportation of all the illegal Mexicans if those percentages would swing the other way.
How about if Congress rescinds the “Act for the admission of the State of California into the Union”, passed in 1850.
Then California becomes an unorganized territory belonging to the United States like it was before Statehood.
Congress could then make it an organized territory.
Whatever parts of the present State of California that want to become a State could do so.
As for the rest, we could renegotiate the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and return it to Mexico. Then it’s Mexico’s problem.

The Civil War did not resolve the issue of secession. Secession is not unconstitutional no matter how many times you try to say that. After the war Jeff Davis wanted(demanded) a trial but was refused one because the AG thought a trial would put secession itself on trial which everyone knew was a loser case.
