Los Angeles Liberals used to hate secession, the notion that states could leave the Union as they did before the Civil War because they didnt agree with the policies of the federal government. But with Donald Trumps election, many California liberals suddenly have warm words for a budding ballot initiative that has just begun collecting signatures in order to place secession, or Calexit, on the ballot.
At the height of the tea-party movement, Texas governor Rick Perry merely hinted at the thought that Texas might react to President Obamas executive overreach by reclaiming its one-time status as an independent republic. He was denounced as something akin to a traitor; critics lamented that he wanted to return Texas to the era of sharecroppers or Jim Crow. Now Dan Schnur, who teaches political communications at the University of Southern California, says California is the new Texas, with its elected officials promoting a virtual secession. The secessionists plan to take to the legislature, the courts, and the streets to resist Trumps agenda. Never before have so many prominent Californians gotten into such a reactionary, defensive crouch.

On policy after policy, from dramatically higher minimum wages to the nations most steeply progressive income tax, Californias leaders are pursuing a 180-degree departure from the priorities of Team Trump. They say this is the perfect time for a breakup, and they cite a new Reuters-Ipsos poll showing that 32 percent of Californians (mostly Democrats) back the idea.
As a Californian, I view the Calexit movement with amusement, since there is zero chance that Congress would ever provide enough votes to allow California to leave peacefully, and the alternative exit ramp would involve a modern-day civil war.

San Andreas gets a vote in this, you know.
Actually it would be better to get so called red counties to form their own state...probably could get some areas in central and southern coast.
I think some of the leftist think (stink?)..is due to the facts that most of them live in citied where the mayor is the boss and they think potus is same way..not even understanding our federal republic..so if they dont like the mayor they just vote him out or pout..just separate them out..county by county..and let them supply their own water..power and food and justice..and ecologically sound commerce and pick up the pieces later..

We don’t need a Venezuela on our Western border.
I will take the proposed state of Jefferson boundaries any day. I don’t want Sacramento any where near the Jefferson State.
Internal differences aren’t enough of a reason to split a state. Internal differences combined with huge size is. With 40 million people, California is almost twice the population as the next largest state (Texas, with 26 million). As a single entity, California is a very large unitary government (our state governments are hardly confederations of county governments, rather our counties and municipalities are creatures of our state governments).
Very large states should be able to split. It is not necessary to define what is meant by “very large” beforehand. But, clearly, each of the resulting states would still have to be at least average size (6.4 million), perhaps at least 1.5 times average size (9.5 million).
And, we don’t want anything like gerrymandering. The split lines have to make sense.
My idea for splitting California is four states: Los Angeles County, San Francisco (the bay area), Northern California (capital Sacramento) and Southern California (capital San Diego). This would make two city-states (very liberal), and two moderate rural-urban mix states.
The only other places I see this working are: Chicago (Cook County plus surrounding metro counties) and New York City (the five counties thereof). This would make two more city-states and two more moderate rural-urban mix states.
Germany is a federal republic and it has a couple city-states (Berlin and Hamburg).
Speaking of city-states, Washington, D.C., is too small to be a free standing city states. The populated part of the district should be joined to Maryland for voting in federal elections (Senator and Congressman as well as President), with no separate 3 electoral votes for the remaining depopulated district.
Pretty close to what I was thinking.
I see no reason to give them the offshore islands, though.
Excellent idea! And the Nation of California (in green on the map) becomes a U.S. Protectorate.
While the Left called Rick Perry a traitor for suggesting that Texas secede, I don’t hear anyone on our side declaring that they will miss California, should it leave the Union. There’s a difference worth noting between conservatives and liberals.
Could tell people what the illegal immigration goal was that it was an invasion... Reconquista. But people didn't listen
Again it was always run by hardcore left using the illegals as fodder
Not a bad start...i think you can just knock out a few counties in cali...just look at the pres. vote by county and separate out the blue counties
.wouldn”t be surprised if some blue counties would go red either..
California mitosis.
Doesn't mean it wouldn't work out now. A lot of water under the bridge, and in the veins too, since then.
Modern day California secessionists should at least say that Southern States had every right to secede. Let’s have a little consistency.
The idea of splitting CA into three states seems to have some merit. However, prepare yourself for four more senators. How about if Texas becomes ten states? Eighteen more Senators?
Or they could split California into two states: Right California and Left California.
“The area should not secede, the area should be purged from the Union as if it were a cancer”

Agree regarding the whacko residents. The problem with ceding that land is they’re bankrupt. It won’t be the Mexicans bailing them out. It will be the Chicoms taking over and establishing military bases.
Or, as a bowel movement! :-)
It should seriously be looked into. I dunno what it takes to break up states like that, but it would really redound to our benefit in the Congress and Electoral College, would it not?
Imagine if rural PA and NY got their own Senators and electoral college votes.
We can’t mess around anymore. We’ve got at least four years here, we need to start cementing gains.
Wouldn’t work. These people aren’t interested in having their own liberal government. That they’ve already got. What they want to do is rule us.
