I just bought 10 avocados for $10 at Von’s.
All large size. Haas and Fuerte.
The reason 80% of the avocados come from Mexico is because the feds opened the door to cheap imports and shut off the water to California, driving avocado farms out of business. Califoria being where 95% of US avocado production came from before 2014.
However, with the drought over, and the feds hopefully off the backs of farmers, we can expect avocado production to increase in California and we can all have cheap guacamole again, tax or no.
I don’t buy Mexican produce because I love my health too much.
I wish the trump administration would star a go fund page. The wall could be paid for in less than a week. The people want it. I don’t care if we pay for it, I just want it going up now.
It’ll put Americans to work which will lower my taxes. Well worth it.
I hate avocados, so I’m good.
A Mexican avocado from a Mexican market is far superior to anything grown in California. We eat at least one a day. With that said, we’ll just do without avocados if the price becomes prohibitive.
Dos Equis with salt and lime? Hate to give those up, but I probably should anyway. I’ll pay the difference for the occasions that we really want to drink a few beers.
No margaritas will suck, but I will survive without them. Something else I should probably give up regardless.
Meh. I’ll do without most anything if it means keeping the illegals out of this country.
California, Florida and Cuba have more avocados for sale than does Mexico.
BS static analysis from an economic illiterate. The author doesn’t even seem to stop and consider domestic production will increase.
Fake news.
20% import duty does not equal 20% retail price increase.
Nike pays about $4 for a pair of running shoes from the country of manufacture. A 20% import tariff would $.80 in cost to a $120 pair of shoes.
Article is a pile of crap. Avacados cost 80 cents to $1.50 at the most, different times of year, never “a few dollars”. A lot of them are from California. “Takis” is not “common” and not “staple” if I never heard of it. Tomatoes are grown all over the southern U.S. as well as in my patio pots. This is Star-Telegram in Ft. Worth, TX I believe. Writer knows better.
Oh, no. I’ll have to pay for food now??
I’ll pay the extra. We save more by not having illegals leeching off the system
Actually, I would be willing to pay more for ANY vegetable or product if it meant we didn’t have any more illegals, period.
I’m more worried about the prices of almonds and walnuts going through the roof for the sake of a couple of fish in a river near San Francisco.
What about Kalifornia avocados? A lot of the things we import from Mexico can be grown here by American farmers. Plus, we don’t have to bump up the tax on foodstuffs.....they assume it has to be uniform in order to make their meme work.
Mark Levin is ranting that we, the purchasers, will pay the tax. No we won't, because we won't buy a product that costs 20% more. We will buy a product made in the USA that doesn't have the tax.
I avoid imported food items for cesspool nations at all costs anyways.
Maybe once this aisle is so overpriced it will make room for more AMERICAN PRODUCE.
