It was a claim that President Donald Trump repeated on the campaign trail: that he would build a wall and that the Mexicans would pay for it. In his first few days in office, Trump appeared to make good on one portion of that promise, by signing an executive order for the planning and building of that wall to proceed.
But the cost for that wall will temporarily be borne by Americans, Trump said, and Mexicos government insists it will not pay for the construction on the border. On Thursday, President Donald Trump floated a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico which suggested that until Trumps promised reimbursement from the Mexicans materializes, Americans would pay for the border wall with their pocketbooks.
The White House clarified afterwards that Trumps suggestion was an option rather than an official proposal, but social media users quickly questioned the possible uptick in one particular grocery item: avocados, of which 80 percent come from
Americas southern neighbor. Though the price of the guacamoles main ingredient varies from market to market, the creamy green fruit usually costs a few dollars. Assuming a $3 cost, a 20 percent tax would increase the price to $3.60.
Takis, a common packaged food snack, would go from $6 to $7.20, the Washington Post reported. Other staples like tomato paste would also see only a slight markup, from about $1.20 to $1.44.

The Mexican fruit was not allowed in until relatively recently -- except for certain times of year. That prohibition protected American growers.
We can thank the Chilean imports for breaking that set-up. Or curse them under one's breath sort'a like the Morro growers would.
The deal there is that the Morro fruit would come in late, and so pretty consistently would fetch a good price.
The changes made harvest strategizing difficult. I do not pretend to know the answers. (not enough information on when other harvests are most likely to come in, critical price points, etc.)
There was a fire in Fallbrook CA (see I-15 Avocado Highway) about5-6 years ago. 20,000 Avo trees destroy. many not replaced because water pries went up with the drought. Now we have rain but still not totally restored in soCal. This area could produce much more avocados and citrus if it was profitable. Most of what is grown in Mexico can be grown in soCal, especially Imperial Valley and the big valley.
Let the Mayonnaise war begin!
Yeah, but it's actually quite edible. (Venezuelan)
It has hot, garlic, onions, jalapenos, green peppers, cilantro. Lots of flavor. It's a great dip with tortilla chips.
Guacamole tastes like.......nothing.
Outside of a farmer's market or online, I don't know where to find it in a supermarket. And I've looked
Tried growing my own the past two summers with no luck. :(
Well, once the Wall finally gets built the Peso should devalue about 30%, so we’ll break even.
I just bought 10 avocados for $10 at Von’s.
All large size. Haas and Fuerte.
Yes, that rings a bell. The industry there has been growing in the last few decades, if memory serves. I browse a awful lot of info -- can't remember it all, so thank you for the reminder.
Parts of equatorial Africa could maybe get into the act?
However, it can be difficult to import into Europe. Lots of red tape. They can be picky & demanding. The European Union was supposed to streamline things, turn it all into a one-stop-shopping-Bureaucracy as far as import-export regulations were concerned, but often ended up churning out regulations that were (virtually) priced by the ton, with seemingly significant portions of whatever overall benefits there were going to the rules writers in Brussels.
Those people lived in luxury, baby. Sweet. Good work if you could get it --- and all but answerable to no one but a few politicians not empowered to do much more than pitch a bitch (if they lacked leverage to directly twist enough arms). Brussels would keep churning out more and more regulations, accompanied with Euro version of "it's for the children" kind of rhetoric in defense of whatever they chose was "best".
I'm under the impression that such as I've just vaguely outlined is part of why the English voted Brexit.
Wild blackberries grow on my property, so do blueberries. And these berries, in grocery stores in Ct. are locally grown.
The reason 80% of the avocados come from Mexico is because the feds opened the door to cheap imports and shut off the water to California, driving avocado farms out of business. Califoria being where 95% of US avocado production came from before 2014.
However, with the drought over, and the feds hopefully off the backs of farmers, we can expect avocado production to increase in California and we can all have cheap guacamole again, tax or no.
I stopped going to “ authentic Mexican “restaurants. They serve beef with lots of muscle and gristle.
I’m not into real third world cuisine.
What grain, fruit or vegetable cannot be grown in America?
I cant think of one.

A long time ago, I read that no coffee is grown in the U.S.
Even that may be different now.
Hawaii grows a lot of coffee.
I don’t buy Mexican produce because I love my health too much.
I wish the trump administration would star a go fund page. The wall could be paid for in less than a week. The people want it. I don’t care if we pay for it, I just want it going up now.

Bananas, but they dont come from Mexico anyway. Ive got a banana tree growing in my greenhouse, anxious to see how it does.

Bananas are grown in Hawaii. Perhaps you meant “continential U.S.”?
Illegal immigration is estimated to cost the U.S. $113 Billion a year. Most of that, $84 billion is paid at the state and local levels.
California pays out almost $22 Billion to illegals each year! Their state budget deficit is $14 billion.
That's a lot of guacamole!
A lot of the produce that we get from Mexico is grown by Mennonite and Mormon colonies that moved down there for the cheaper land.
Mexican food is vile anyway. - always looks post-digested or regurgitated.

Open a can of refried beans. Looks and smells just like Alpo.
