|
Fred William Zabitosky (October 27, 1942 January 18, 1996) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Vietnam War.
Zabitosky joined the Army from his birth city of Trenton, New Jersey in 1959, and by February 19, 1968 was serving as a Staff Sergeant with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). On that day, while on reconnaissance patrol in Laos, his small team came under intense enemy fire. Zabitosky directed the defense until rescue helicopters arrived, and when the helicopter that was to extract him from the battlefield crashed, he ignored his own injuries to save the downed craft's pilot. Zabitosky was later promoted to Sergeant First Class and, in 1969, was presented with the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon. He retired from the Army after 30 years of service with the rank of Master Sergeant.
Zabitosky, aged 53 at his death, was buried in Lumbee Memorial Park, Lumberton, North Carolina. A street, the former Community Access Road, on nearby Fort Bragg was named in his honor. |
Sergeant First Class Zabitosky's official Medal of Honor citation reads:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sfc. Zabitosky, U.S. Army, distinguished himself while serving as an assistant team leader of a 9-man Special Forces long-range reconnaissance patrol. Sfc. Zabitosky's patrol was operating deep within enemy-controlled territory when they were attacked by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army unit. Sfc. Zabitosky rallied his team members, deployed them into defensive positions, and, exposing himself to concentrated enemy automatic weapons fire, directed their return fire. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Sfc. Zabitosky ordered his patrol to move to a landing zone for helicopter extraction while he covered their withdrawal with rifle fire and grenades. Rejoining the patrol under increasing enemy pressure, he positioned each man in a tight perimeter defense and continually moved from man to man, encouraging them and controlling their defensive fire. Mainly due to his example, the outnumbered patrol maintained its precarious position until the arrival of tactical air support and a helicopter extraction team. As the rescue helicopters arrived, the determined North Vietnamese pressed their attack. Sfc. Zabitosky repeatedly exposed himself to their fire to adjust suppressive helicopter gunship fire around the landing zone. After boarding 1 of the rescue helicopters, he positioned himself in the door delivering fire on the enemy as the ship took off. The helicopter was engulfed in a hail of bullets and Sfc. Zabitosky was thrown from the craft as it spun out of control and crashed. Recovering consciousness, he ignored his extremely painful injuries and moved to the flaming wreckage. Heedless of the danger of exploding ordnance and fuel, he pulled the severely wounded pilot from the searing blaze and made repeated attempts to rescue his patrol members but was driven back by the intense heat. Despite his serious burns and crushed ribs, he carried and dragged the unconscious pilot through a curtain of enemy fire to within 10 feet of a hovering rescue helicopter before collapsing. Sfc. Zabitosky's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Yes, the rain continues and it really needs to stop for a short time. LOL! I need to go to the store to get cat litter and dry food and really don’t want to drag that stuff into the house all soggy. Looks like that’s going to be the case because the rain isn’t going to stop til tomorrow morning and I can’t wait til then. Drat!
It’s coming down hard at the moment. Murphy’s running back and forth through the house yeowling because the sound of rain pounding on the roof scares him for some reason. Silly cat.
You’ve gotten a lot of snow. I can see tree limbs drooping under the weight. It would be nice if someone would clean the snow off the 4th Ave. cam lens. LOL! Can’t see a thing from that one.
Has your sister done any more shoveling on the deck? Or did she say enough is enough? :-)

Howdy, radu!
I did have a good day! Overslept on my nap...warm kitties...and was late to evening worship, but I made it not toooo late!
Hope you had a good day! Nice weather for you? I sure hope y’all didn’t get any of the deadly weather that GA, MS and AL got!
It was windy here. At one time this morning the temp was 44 with a wind chill of 35. That’s a lotta wind!
My MIL is still doing well. The incision area did hurt when she tried to push herself up into a standing position when we stood for a song, and that sort of worried me. But she was better when she sat down and relaxed.

They have more or less settled. The apartment they are in temporarily is much smaller than their house, so it's a challenge to find places for their things. And the girls have to share a room. Not sure how that'll work out. LOL!
Piper took this picture this morning! LOL!
She posted with it..."Omg moose on my b day"
It and some "friends" were in their parking lot! They know not to get close, and she took the picture from inside.

LOL! Warm kittehs make for a nice nap but today wasn’t a good day for it. Made you late for evening church service. Oops!
Glad your MIL is still doing well and hope her incision doesn’t give her any more problems.
Yeow, that sure was a windy day you had. And a cold one. BRRRRR! Apparently we have some wind coming because we’re under a wind advisory later tonight into the morning. At least we aren’t as cold as y’all are ..... yet. That comes later this week.
Thankfully we didn’t get the stormy weather that clobbered MS, AL, and GA today. It’s just been wet here and we need it to get the water table back up where it belongs. We’re still in deficit from last year.

Yes, our lil girlie is gone. The vet was a bit shocked, as I was, because her numbers weren’t all that bad in the test Monday. We certainly didn’t expect complete shutdown so soon.
But she’s in a beautiful spot with our other sweet kittehs who have gone before her and her kitty spirit is playing in the trees, chasing squirrels and birds. :-)
We miss her but still have the other 34 to love on and be tormented by. :-)

Oh, I’m so glad you got some rain! Y’all need it nearly as bad as West Texas does! Maybe it won’t be too windy. It’s been driving me bonkers! I noticed it was windy at nearly every nest I checked on this morning. Since I didn’t need that sound to come from outside AND on the computer, I left the sites pretty quick!
I wish Dale Hollow had a mic. It’s almost too quiet there! LOL!

We’re thrilled to get it. I do my readings midnight to midnight and just dumped the gauge. 1.7 inch today. Most has been soaking rain but there have been a few heavy downpours.
It’s probably going to get pretty windy since they have the wind advisory up. We get a lot of strong wind here so it’s nothing new. I’d rather have that than the tornados that hit south of us.
Poor Ma Berry has had a rough day at her nest. That tree has been rockin’! The poor NE eaglets were trying so hard to squeeze underneath Juliet to stay dry. LOL!
I just turn the speakers off if there’s a lot of wind making a racket on the mics, and that was the case this evening.
I saw in chat at the Dale Hollow cam that they’re trying to raise money for a mic. If they manage to do it, we’ll have sound next year. That would be nice!
