The U.S. Army on Thursday awarded Sig Sauer a contract worth $580 million to make the next service pistol based on the company's P320 handgun.
Sig Sauer beat out Glock Inc., FN America and Beretta USA, the maker of the current M9 9mm service pistol, in the competition for the Modular Handgun System, or MHS, program.
"We are both humbled and proud that the P320 was selected by the U.S. Army as its weapon of choice," Ron Cohen, chief executive officer of Sig Sauer, said in a statement to Military.com here at SHOT Show, the world's largest gun show, taking place this week in the city.
"Securing this contract is a testimony to Sig Sauer employees, their commitment to innovation, quality and manufacturing the most reliable firearms in the world," Cohen added.
The Army launched its long-awaited XM17 MHS competition in late August 2015 to replace its Cold War-era M9 9mm pistol.
"By maximizing full and open competition across our industry partners, we have optimized private sector advancements in handguns, ammunition and magazines, and the end result will ensure a decidedly superior weapon system for our warfighters," Army Acquisition Executive Steffanie Easter said said in a press release...

The beavertail is to protect the hand from the slide - again, its a gun ‘for the masses’, and features like that are exaggerated.
My last post “you” should have been “your”.
No qualms against the 45 round. I carry one frequently but it is not a 1911, it is modern higher capacity version. My favorite carry gun is a 10mm in a Glock 20, twice the amount of ammo than a 1911. Also have the Glock 21.
While the number of pistols I've had over the years can be counted on two hands, so far the two American-made Sig Sauer are my favorites. I conceal carry the subcompact, perfect size, and use the full size P320 for IDPA and USPSA matches.
I had a 226 for years. Ran thousands of rounds through it without issue. Lack of safety was a major selling point to me at the time. If I pull the trigger, I want the gun to fire.
I’ll always take a 1911 in .45 over a 9mm toy (.38) You don’t need 18 shot if the first one does the job.
TPIWWP!
Leave it to CNN to put a negative spin on anything good.
Too big a gun for the ladies and homos.
I like that.. Yea but it’s American made just need upgrade it a bit.. Then it’s modern... 9mm too small a bullet.. 40 mag would be ok or better yet the 44 mag auto..
Notice that everyone else is getting rid of exaggerated beavertails in their designs, especially in models which have a very low slide profile. It appears unnecessary and louses up the grip where the web of the hand meets the grip. I suspect someone at Sig intended for this big beavertail so as to attract the notion that since the USGI 1911 had one, the new USGI service pistol ought to have one too.
I like the modularity of the serialized trigger pack, but other manufacturers will probably improve on the design so that it’s not an obstruction to the contour of the grip.
Make it Colt 1911 with new accelerant powder in the ammo. Toughen up the gun Kimber style . Each gun shouldd be able to tale a variety of magazines for military application. 6, 8 16 and 100 round drum. Sould der stocks could be available as kit with night vision scopes. The whole package from s simple side arm to a suppressed special ops weapon should be the contract, grips with integral laser pointer, etc, all the bells and whistles.
Colt should make it but who cares? Remington Arms would be just fine.
It could be multiple suppliers of 1911s just like it was in WWII. Only now the quality and toughness would be much higher. We have much more advanced materials science these days, make it work for us. AMERICA FIRST!
As we all know, the main safety is knowing your weapon and training and especially awareness of your trigger finger placement. That said, I am glad my 870 has a push button safety since probably would be used in the dark of night for home defense. I've been to the local range to practice for more training and have practice loading with eyes closed. I have a sleeve on the buttstock with the buck rounds and a bright light on the barrell. Yes, I've heard your self-defense weapons should always be loaded. We have a self-defense protocol in case of home invasion. If you'd like to hear, be happy to explain.
I figure the “safety” exists between your ears, or you’re screwed no matter what features the firearm have.
“if”
You’ve got to HIT them with it, first, and the 9mm has better external ballistics and allows for a much higher magazine capacity.
They can pack more 9mm rounds in an ammo can. I think it really comes down to that.
Extra rounds in the magazine and lighter weapon are plusses.
Kick is a negative. 9mm NATO rounds have a more uncomfortable recoil than 45 auto IMO.
I carried an M9 for 4 years. Two out of four years, the gun malfunctioned (as in needing to go back to the armory before it could fire again) in the middle of pistol quals. Didn’t leave me feeling good about carrying it in combat.
It did shoot straight when it worked.
They could upgrade the Colt 1911 to be more modern and it is
American Made...
I don’t think the malfunctions had anything to do with the design of the M9, I blame the low bidder for the springs.
Hopefully, Sig doesn’t deliver a pile of crap to the military like Berretta USA did.
