Hand flat and straight line down to elbow, and pointed to right above eyebrow, slightly touching.
It's always a sign of respect to correctly perform the military courtesies and customs.
(Not like some presidents who salute with drinks in their hands.)

Loved this moment! I would love to compare it to Obama’s first trip down the steps and what kind of initial salute he gave. Can someone dig up video of that??
