Many people in the United States and abroad have consoled themselves by assuming that Donald Trumps outrageous statements were just politically driven, and hed temper them once he became president. That thinking seems more wishful than ever when the man chosen to lead the worlds most powerful country keeps saying that two pillars of postwar security and prosperity the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union are obsolete.
Mr. Trumps latest salvo against stalwart American allies came in a joint interview over the weekend with The Times of London and Bild, a German newspaper. His published remarks have angered and shaken Americas closest allies in Europe.
Mr. Trump said NATO was obsolete because it had failed to resist terrorism, and he repeated earlier charges that some of its members were not paying their fair share. He described the European Union as basically a vehicle for Germany and predicted that other European nations would probably follow Britains lead by leaving it.
Then came potshots at Germanys chancellor, Angela Merkel, a strong leader who is facing a tough re-election. He called her brave decision to open Germanys borders to migrants and refugees a very catastrophic mistake. He also suggested that he saw no difference between Ms. Merkel and Vladimir Putin, saying he would, at least initially, trust them equally, even though it was the Russian president who meddled with the American election, bombed civilians in Syria, crushed dissent in his own country and invaded Ukraine.

Like I just said in another post, surely the Mighty EU military machine can swat Russia or China like a fly.
What is there, 28 countries in NATO? How could one backwards, cowboy filled, gun living, insane enough to vote for Trump country matter either way?
We need to take care of European free-loaders, why exactly?
So they can take care of their own people while we foot the bill for them?
The free ride’s over. Trump means he when he says America First.
All of a sudden, the Clintoonie WarHawks are in love with the military.
>>>” it was the Russian president who meddled with the American election,”<<<
Most if not all Americans should find that quote offensive. When did the USA become a ‘banana republic’ incapable of ensuring legit elections within the USA?
“Those are our planes now.”
Russia is not Serbia.
American war hawks overlook the fact Russia has nuclear weapons.
We’re going to war with it because Russia allegedly helped to elect Trump? Seriously?
And where’s the proof?
Most if not all Americans should find the NY SLIMES quote offensive.
Ah yes, the NY Times. The same outfit that spent decades giving blow jobs to every Bolshevik it could find, while trashing the USA.
Trump’s not too far off on the Nato call. Nato was perfect during the cold war, usefull immediately after, and a burden starting in the Clinton administration, the Yugoslavia involvement was wrong.
We do need to pare back, particularly the Europe nations undergoing Islamification. We can’t save them and every time we would try we would be betrayed by other countries Islamic sympathiser.
The world is being remade and Trump is favoring the Russians over the Chinese. I would imagine that if some dig deep enough they might find a bit of interference from the Chinese — which would be acceptable from the Democrats.
Yes all the hacking talk is absurd and a distraction. But having said that, it’s not about being a “banana republic” — everyone is and always will be vulnerable to tech challenges/threats.
When has the nyt ever cared about NATO?
Gee, the Times neglected to mention that the US also gains.
How did they forget that part?
NYT’s assessments stem from its hatred of sovereignty and liberty.
The MSM is the Country’s greatest threat.
The “no blood for oil” leftists were 100% against war in Iraq, but didn’t mind at all mind Obama/Clinton’s utter destruction of Libya and Syria. Now they want a war with Russia.
NYT reds: the spiritual heirs of Walter Duranty.
Let’s march them off to Utah gulags, but tell them they are all-inclusive ski resorts.
Hillary can run the women guards. She’ll really shine as ‘Irma von Clintonstein’.
>>”everyone is and always will be vulnerable to tech challenges/threats.”<<
USA is not ‘everyone’. Though I remember as far back as 2003 when hackers (not necessarily Russians) were finding backdoors in Microsoft products and telling Bill Gates and co to get their act together.
I have NEVER seen the NY Times or the Washington Post champion NATO before.
This is hilarious.
There is no “proof” of course. What we are witnessing is the Washington “establishment” — many of whom got their start fighting the “establishment” in the 60s and 70s — incredibly paranoid that an “outsider” is about to become President and spill the beans about what they’ve been up to all these years, with OUR money.
Just guessing the DC bars are filled to capacity. Every night.
