Trump May Herald a New Political Order
The Wall Street Journal ^ | January 16, 2017 | John Steele Gordon

For all their noise and news dominance, presidential elections typically don’t change the country all that much. That isn’t a bad thing but a sign of how strong American democracy is. It rarely veers far from the center, where successful policy usually lies. But on rare occasions, deep historical currents and extraordinary political talents produce an entirely new order. It happened in the presidential elections of 1828, 1860, 1896, 1932—and, quite probably, 2016.

Denied the presidency in 1824 by what he called a “corrupt bargain” in the House of Representatives, Tennessee’s Andrew Jackson swept to a landslide four years later. He was the first president from west of the Appalachians—indeed, the first from anywhere other than Virginia or Massachusetts. Born dirt-poor, Jackson was also the first president to rise to affluence solely by his own effort.

*** Jackson created the modern Democratic Party, and the intense opposition to his policies coalesced into the Whig Party, establishing the two-party norm that prevails to this day. No wonder the great 19th-century American historian George Bancroft considered Jackson the last of the Founding Fathers.

*** It would take the greatest war in American history to reunite the country. By the time the Civil War was over, the nation had been transformed. The South, impoverished and politically crippled, would be effectively a Third World country inside a First World one for 100 years. The North, with its rapidly expanding industry and growing population, was politically dominant. More than half the antebellum presidents had been Southern. In the century after the war ended, only two Southerners were elected to the White House: Woodrow Wilson, a Virginia native who made his career in New Jersey, and Texas’ Lyndon B. Johnson.

This seems a best case scenario. There are still too many RINOs, looters, parasites and crony-capitalists running the show in Washington...

Trump has already established a new political order. Much more to come.

I know this will sound strange to some, but if Trump can heal the great racial divide, return love of nation to our people, strengthen the nation in a healthy manner globally, and start making significant strides on our national debt, I'd go so far as to say that Trump may indeed be another last Founding Father.

In a number of ways, he has their lofty ideals and drive to help this nation fulfill it's destiny. He wants that for every citizen too. He plays no favorites in his desire to see our citizen's lives improved.

IMO < Pence seems destined to follow on Trump and perhaps champion the same ideals making him another Founding Father of sorts.

Without this man at this time, I believe our nation would have fallen. Trump helped us dodge a bullet.

We live on as a nation today, because he put an end to the Obama/Clinton era.

Thank you God in heaven.

The author trades in ideas— and he makes a nice argument— while ignoring numbers. A massive immigration influx helped Roosevelt. We’re dealing with a similar influx today. Pretty hard to sign on to an analysis that doesn’t take demographics into account.

Actually D1, God has always made sure the right man appeared when needed. I think it’s because no matter how many have forgotten God, many of us have not. We also refuse to abandon Israel.

"We live on as a nation today, because he put an end to the Obama/Clinton era."

Consider changing that to Obama/Bush/Clinton/Bush.

IMHO it was a reset to 1988, Pat Buchanan was right in 92' and Savage's Borders Language and Culture won this time as well as the Tea-Party. Trump's platform is pure Tea-Partitarian and the revenge of Sarah Palin, it's her platform as well if you think of it.

Thank you. Nice thoughts. I agree.

With Lot God asked for only a few men who still followed Him.

Not finding them Lot and his family were told to leave and not look back.

We are fortunate indeed that when our time came, God could see those few among us who still revere His name.

I’d like to see a good solid religious revival in this nation. Those values need to be passed on.

I did think about listing Bush Clinton Bush, but I didn’t want to muddy the water with the thought. (not that I don’t agree with you, because I do)

Obama has moved us way down the road to destruction over the last eight years. As much as I don’t care for Bush, Clinton, and Grandpa Bush, I think Obama was such a new direction that I didn’t want to group them in.

Hillary planning on giving us four more years of Obama and more of her own evil ways, I thought it best to simply focus on them.

The Bushes didn’t come out and support terrorists like Obama did. Clinton was terrible, but I didn’t see him as out and out evil as Obama.

That being said, I think the Clinton’s have both played the part of traitors, just not as overtly as Obama.

Hillary? I think she was as overt as Obama, and I know she wanted to do more. Gag.

Hillary would have gone there in spades from the White House.

Grandpa Bush was ultimately damaged goods. From him on things just escalated to the point the Left gave us Obama, and almost Hillary.

Wow... very close!

I think there is far more than a few. I think most Americans are just starting to be aware how far things have gone. Look how people reacted when PE Trump started saying Merry Christmas

I agree we need a religious awakening in this country. I hope that is coming.

I agree that there are more than a few. I have seen Christian attendance fall at the churches I frequent. As I understand it, attendance has fallen across the nation.

That is a very bad thing. We can’t pass on moral values if nobody is being taught them. And yes, even adults need to have those values reinforced.

We need to humble ourselves before God. Personally, locally, and as a nation.

First Republic, roughly 10 years

Created by the Articles of Confederation; vitiated by a lack of a coin of the realm; destroyed by Shays’ Rebellion and its aftermath.

Second Republic, 72 years

Created by the Constitution.

Argument: Federalism, i.e., the correct balance between state and federal powers.

Founding President: Washington.
Affirming President from same party: Adams for 1 term.
Transformative President (32 years after term of Founding President ends): Jackson.
Follower President from same party: Van Buren, who loses re-election due to economic depression.
Failed President (16 years after term of Follower President ends): Buchanan, who fails because the nostrums of his republic cannot handle the current issues, i.e., slavery and disunion.

Third Republic, 72 years

Created by the Civil War.

Argument: Who will control that all-powerful federal government? An early and primitive form of corporate fascism, where the country is run by Big Business in general and Big Railroads in particular.

Founding President: Lincoln.
Affirming President from same party: Grant for 2 terms (I don’t count Hayes because the 1876 election was probably stolen).
Transformative President (32 years after term of Founding President ends): Theodore Roosevelt, who achieves office via assassination.
Follower President from same party: Taft, who loses re-election due to TR’s ego.
Failed President (16 years after term of Follower President ends): Hoover, who fails because the nostrums of his republic cannot handle the current issue, i.e., depression and the collapse of the banking system.

Fourth Republic, 84 years

Created by the New Deal.

Argument: Who will control that all-powerful federal government? In theory, the people, via alphabet agencies that are part of the Executive while Congress abdicates its right to make law. Big Government replaces Big Business, and democratic socialism replaces corporate fascism.

Founding President: Franklin Roosevelt. His election to 4 terms throws the calculations off and lengthens the time line of the republic.
Affirming President from same party: Truman for 1 term.
Transformative President (32 years after term of Founding President ends): Reagan.
Follower President from same party: the Elder Bush, who loses re-election due to a post-Cold War depression.
Interesting Note: The Younger Bush, a descendant of Franklin Pierce via his mother, takes the same slot in one of his terms as his ancestor.
Failed President (16 years after term of Follower President ends): Obama, who fails because the nostrums of his republic cannot handle the current issue, i.e., depression, deflation and the loss of jobs abroad due to globalization. Surprisingly, the Failed President wins a second term because the opposition party nominates someone who refuses to address the issues because of his own penchant for globalism.

Fifth Republic

Created by – good question. The dominant issue should become clear within the next 12 months. It’s too soon to figure out the crisis that will define the era.

Argument: We’ll watch it fall into place in the next 12 months.

Founding President: Trump.
Interesting Note: The Second (Washington) and Fourth (FDR) republics were formed in electoral landslides. The Third (Lincoln) was formed when the winner didn’t have a popular vote majority, and there were questions about popular mandate and political capital; Fort Sumter provided Lincoln with what he needed. If the Fifth (Trump) follows the pattern of the Third, some crisis, perhaps an internal rebellion, will provide Trump with the political capital to sweep everything before him.

This one sentence may be the rung on which Trump can build..."... but if Trump can heal the great racial divide, return love of nation to our people..."....many teachers and authors will have to lay down their hate-all things-American attitude...teachers should have to teach the Constitution, not argue it's merits as Obama did when he taught. The US Constitution is an ageless document just as the Ten Commandments are.

Excellent breakdown of American history.

But I would lump the most recent three presidents together as one unit of failed president. They really were one solid calamity, each worse than the one previous. It could even be argued that it goes all the way back to Bush the First.

America has had NO definitive leadership since noon on January 20th, 1989. Lord willing, in four days that sordid, wretched era will come to a close in such a way that future generations will marvel at the rebound.

Thank you for saying this. It really hits home, and I needed to hear it given the funk I found myself in after contemplating the Hellish world view of the Deep State.

I tend to focus mostly on the New Testament; but, your comment reminded me of the mercy of The Lord towards Sodom, at Abraham’s behest, based upon there being just 10 righteous people left there. (Genesis 18:16-33)
