The Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday it will not repay claims totaling more than $1.2 billion for economic damages from a mine waste spill the agency accidentally triggered in Colorado, saying the law prohibits it.
The EPA said the claims could be refiled in federal court, or Congress could authorize payments.
But attorneys for the EPA and the Justice Department concluded the EPA is barred from paying the claims because of sovereign immunity, which prohibits most lawsuits against the government.

Just shut the damned thing down and be done with it.

The King Can Do No Wrong
Take that, Peasants
First day! Please...
Fine, just adjust salary of the bastards that authorized this to $1.00 per day, and get some pittance of justice.
If some company or individual did this same thing the EPA would force them into bankruptcy and pick over the carcass.
We’ll do it another way.....shut down the EPA!!
This “sovereign immunity” doctrine is nowhere in the Constitution.
Seems like a nuke might be the only force that can neutralize them.
Barry Goldwater talked about the development of clean nukes, too.
Take the money from the EPAs budget
Sell off the EPA office buildings, desks, computers, chairs, vehicles and close down their expense accounts.
This is such crap....sovereign immunity only protects from LEGAL acts in good faith...it does NOT cover illegal acts or protect incompetence that covers harm to others.
Not only bankruptcy, but prison for the corporate officers and management responsible.
covers = causes
Problem is, the people are sovereign in the USA, not the federal government. Not that the courts recognize that, that is until the people remind them, it seems.
I don’t want to neutralize the EPA. I want to liquidate the EPA.
And that’s just a small part of the virtual impossible task (”but for God”) of dismantling the 70-80% unconstitutional portion of the feds that MUST happen if we are to recover our Free Constitutional Republic.
Eliminate the ridiculous EPA.
The issues are not mutually exclusive.
The EPA will likely not be shut totally down but will be throttled down.
As I look through the vapors that is the political reality.
There were people damaged by the debacle. The solution was offered. Go to Federal court or go to Congress. Congress is the answer. The damage is not unlike those of a severe flood or hurricane. Congress can appoint a commission to sort through the claims and authorize payment.
The slave has become the master. ABOLISH the EPA!
