Dear Amy: I am 21 years old and attend college out of state. I am lucky to go to college, except that I can’t do anything without parents’ approval. They pay for college because they refuse for me to have loans. The problem is that since they pay for my schooling, they hold everything over my head.
If I want to get a piercing, tattoo, etc., I need to ask — even if it’s with my money.
When I come home they only let me go out or visit friends in other towns if I give the names, address and phone numbers of the people I’m visiting.
I understood this in high school, but I can’t live like this anymore. I’m at a loss of what to do.

I gather that you are not ready to take on adulthood to that extent. And, of course, it would be wisest for you to stay in college.
And so — if you choose to stay in college, your parents will control certain aspects of your life. That’s the contract: As long as they are paying the bills, they will treat you like a teenager.

Probably pose as an example to school-age children.
Yikes. My kids get their college paid by us and and we treat them like adults. But then they have behaved like adults since we civilized them. That is bad advice. If that one was mine it would be headed for the military or a job until It could be treated as an adult.
That can be some people's highest and best use.

My 22 year year old daughter, who is in college, recently decided to make a big girl decision, in spite of our family SOP.
I called her up an delivered to her an emancipation proclamation. In typical snow flake fashion she now thinks we hate her. Nope. She wants to take charge of her life, we are allowing that to happen.

Yeah you can quiet college anytime you want, the Marines are always looking for people like this 21 year old whipper snapper who knows it all, and can make decisions on thier own. The Marines need young whippers snappers like that, that is what makes the Marines so good. They just can’t wait to give this young 21 year old whipper snapper a whole new life complete with a fast pace new world view, and new type of fast pace education, free room and board, and a chance to travel the world while at it.(sarcasm alert)

Obviously the kid’s parent know a bit more about him that can be revealed in a letter to an advice column.
I put myself through college all by myself. Never got a penny from either parent. I also got to make all my own decisions.
Nobody is so blind as a child who refuses to see that her parents are just trying to protect her.

The reason we have so many living in their parents’ basements is because the “parents” won’t allow the “children” to grow up and accept responsibility for their own actions.
In post 3.......The perfect example of STUPID! The young woman needs to see that photo and perhaps she will understand why her parents are trying to protect her from herself.
