Reports: Trump national security pick Monica Crowley plagiarized huge sections of her Ph.D thesis

Monica Crowley, President-elect Trump's pick for senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council, appears to have plagiarized numerous sections of her Ph.D. thesis, according to investigations by CNN and Politico.

Politico, in a report published Monday, identified more than a dozen instances of plagiarism in Crowley's Columbia University thesis, "Clearer Than Truth: The Evolution of American Policy Toward the People’s Republic of China Under Truman and Nixon."

On Thursday, CNN's KFile followed up on Politico's report, revealing 40 additional instances of plagiarism in Crowley's thesis, which was submitted in 2000. Her dissertation apparently lifted from scholarly works, the Associated Press, and former secretary of state Henry Kissinger.

Crowley has not responded to requests for comment about the newest investigations into her thesis. She came under fire earlier this week after CNN's KFile revealed she had apparently plagiarized at least 50 sections of her 2012 book, "What The (Bleep) Just Happened?"

This is what it says on page 168 of Crowley's Ph.D. thesis, which can be accessed via the academic database ProQuest:

Mueller found a "rally in support at the beginning of the war and high levels of public support into 1966. By mid-1966, however, support had declined in the wake of such events as infighting among the South Vietnamese and the emergence of vocal criticism of the war during the Fulbright hearings in early 1966. By this time, the public had also come to see that the war would not be over quickly but was instead likely to be a “long, bloody affair.”

The material was copied verbatim from Eric V. Larson's "Casualties and Consensus: The Historical Role of Casualties in Domestic Support for U.S. Military Operations," according to CNN:

The left is relentless in its quest to destroy good people. They go back to college to find dirt, unless it’s for a certified leftist.

Has anyone mentioned that Corey Booker pled guilty to corruption?

Replication of entire paragraphs with neither quote marks nor attribution certainly looks like plagiarism to me. I think Mr. Trump has got to let her go.

I don’t excuse people just because they are on “our side.

I agree.

The real issue here is that these 'politicians' are only AGAINST her because of Trump.

If she were being picked by someone else, those same 'politicians' would be licking her boots.

Good enough for Vice President Joe Biden, too.

There are quote marks, indicating no intent to deceive. Hence, there is no fraud. It’s apparently an error, not academic fraud.

TPTB determine a narrative and then ignore any questions contradictory. They blow it off as “conspiracy” stuff.

There’s definitely many things wrong about that clown and the official narrative.

The way the MSM has jumped aboard has made it the official propaganda arm of one of the larger cults of personality in modern existence.

It’s jaw-dropping to behold.

How is quoting another work and attributing it plagiarism?

I actually blame Colombia University for not grading her dissertation correctly (if any of this is true). I think once she received the PHD, it shouldn’t matter anymore.

Exactly....Our local historians screwed up their own Town history embellishing the truth. Over the last 25 years, I've learned to separate the embellishments from the facts.

People don't realize they are so patterned when they write.

I think it also has something to do with being a mother and looking your kid in the eye.

As long as you make the proper attributions

IIRC, that is exactly what they are complaining about.

Though they never complained about anyone else in government doing it before. At least never any Democrat politician.

I’m not in the mood to fact check this. The left is wearing me down with their fake news, so that I now dismiss their whining without bothering to check whether they were finally correct.

Did she plagiarize those works to present another author’s words and ideas as her own, or did she improperly format her academic citations in a manner that makes her intent to give credit clear but that did not meet the standards of whatever format was supposed to have been used? Are the works that were “plagiarized” in her bibliography, or did she sneak those words in with no indication that the sources had been consulted?

Correct!
That is exactly how they operate. Truth are lies, lies are truth.

We had not seen Mochelle’s thesis

Why would we? She was the wife of a President. We have a First Lady now who may not even have finished college but said she did. Not sure which is worse.

“She wrote the thesis 16 years ago, and they are just discovering this NOW??”

That’s not unusual. Martin Luther King’s dissertation went largely unquestioned for 36 years before a review board determined it was plagiarized.

The simple fact is that the professors who read Crowley’s in 2001 were not anticipating any plagiarism. Also, now with the internet access to so many books that we can take granted for today it’s easier to catch plagiarism. I’ve caught people plagiarizing her at FR - including at least one person who denied doing it and then I forced him to admit he lied about it.

Many high school or college instructors now require a hard copy paper as well as an electronic copy of the paper so they can cut and paste text into search engines to detect plagiarism.

How much does it cost to obtain a doctorate at Columbia?

Is that with, or without actually attending classes ?
