I Abstained From Sex for a Year to Donate Blood (NYT alert)
New York Times ^ | January 12, 2017 | JAY FRANZONE

IT shouldn’t be a big deal that I gave blood this week, but it is. To do it, I had to give up all forms of sex for a year. The reason: I’m gay.

With what we know today about the disease, it’s a stupid reason.

In 1985, in the early days of the AIDS crisis, the United States Food and Drug Administration recommended that men who had sex with other men be prohibited from donating blood indefinitely. This policy made sense at the time. In the decades since, the nation has made enormous progress against the virus. What was once a death sentence is now a treatable, chronic condition. And we can now detect what had been an elusive virus within seven to 28 days of infection, using nucleic acid testing.

In 2015, the agency modified the lifetime ban and allowed men who had sex with men to donate blood if they had abstained from sex for one year. This revision followed several years of study after an advisory committee found the lifetime ban “suboptimal.”

But this one-year blanket policy, which depends on the honesty of the would-be donor, still falls short by failing to consider a potential donor’s individual risk factors, an approach some other countries follow with success. As a result, this prohibition, which the American Public Health Association said “is not based in science but appears to be modeled after other countries’ choices and fears,” effectively forbids as many as two million potential donors to give blood, according to an analysis published in 2014 by the Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A. School of Law.

This past summer, the F.D.A. began the process of reconsidering its one-year policy.

I guess it is worth risking AIDS so that self-loathing narcissist homosexuals can feel good about themselves.

Yeah, no way. Homosexuals are sexually obsessed deviants who define their entire life around having sex. They’d probably kill themselves before going a year without sex voluntarily.

If you’re gay please don’t donate blood to a blood bank.

Oh, I’m not allowed to give blood in America. And my orientation is heterosexual. They prefer gay blood to me. I was thrown out of children’s hospital when they were running low on universal donor blood.

My crime? I lived in Switzerland when there was a mad cow risk in the U.K. Switzerland doesn’t import beef from the U.K. And I never stepped foot in England at the time. But my blood is not as good as gays who say they abstain from sex.

I’ve been banned from donating blood because I ate beef in Britain thirty years ago.

I wonder if the Secret Service would ever allow the Community Organizer-In-Chief to get blood from a pervert. For that matter even if they did I wonder if Obola would accept it.

Ten bucks says the answer to both questions is an emphatic "no".

I had Hepatitus A when I was in the 6th Grade. Got it from food eaten at the county fair. I have NEVER been able to donate blood because “it might still be in my blood steam.” If nearly 60 years later I still can’t donate blood, I have no sympathy for those who have had Aids who can’t donate their blood either.

And my daughter who was born in Germany during the coinciding Mad Cow Scare and Chernobyl of the 1980s or any other US military dependent child born in Germany or England or Italy during that period are also deemed “too dangerous to others” to donate their blood.

Absolutely. Why do they need to donate blood anyway? They are still a very small portion of the population and I don’t think they’ll make much difference in the totals.

We need to reject them as a health risk and ignore their whining.

I think the elephant in the room here is that some homosexuals are driven by a secret desire to pass on what is inside of them. It is part of the mental disease that they carry.

Umm, considering the recreational habits of men in prison, I don’t think that would be much better than letting the homos donate.

Bill Clinton saw no problem with it. Or I should say, Hillary saw no problem with it.

"In the decades since, the nation has made enormous progress against the virus. What was once a death sentence is now a treatable, chronic condition.

Not to put too fine point on this, but wouldn't we have better served if the research done with money stolen from taxpaying citizens had not happened?

Case in point, for example, Shep Smith...

There was a time that was a standard question in the pre-donation screening.

I think the elephant in the room here is that some homosexuals are driven by a secret desire to pass on what is inside of them. It is part of the mental disease that they carry.

There is definitely some of that among the Homosexual legions, but I think the dominant emotional force driving them is the desperate need to believe that they are normal. This delusion can only be maintained in their minds if they can eliminate all the occasions in which they see themselves treated differently from normal people.

They don't want to believe that they are sick in the mind, and so they make every effort to stop any occasions of reality intruding on the mental picture of "normal" they paint for themselves."

In other words, they insist everyone share their delusion, in the manner a "transgender" male wants to be referred to as "she."

Actually I would go to a Calamari parade just for the floats. They’d probably move them in the wrong direction, however.

I have to ask my rabbi if I am allowed to cheer at a calamari float. At least I can keep pigs as pets, unlike Muslims. Got to practice my calamari ring hooping. See you on Squid Pride Day!

I’d have to say you can cheer them but not eat them. This brings up another point. I may like Calamari, but I don’t go around demanding it be made Kosher just so I can join the Kosher crowd. You don’t have to change your definition of Kosher just for me.
