I Abstained From Sex for a Year to Donate Blood (NYT alert)
New York Times ^ | January 12, 2017 | JAY FRANZONE

IT shouldn’t be a big deal that I gave blood this week, but it is. To do it, I had to give up all forms of sex for a year. The reason: I’m gay.

With what we know today about the disease, it’s a stupid reason.

In 1985, in the early days of the AIDS crisis, the United States Food and Drug Administration recommended that men who had sex with other men be prohibited from donating blood indefinitely. This policy made sense at the time. In the decades since, the nation has made enormous progress against the virus. What was once a death sentence is now a treatable, chronic condition. And we can now detect what had been an elusive virus within seven to 28 days of infection, using nucleic acid testing.

In 2015, the agency modified the lifetime ban and allowed men who had sex with men to donate blood if they had abstained from sex for one year. This revision followed several years of study after an advisory committee found the lifetime ban “suboptimal.”

But this one-year blanket policy, which depends on the honesty of the would-be donor, still falls short by failing to consider a potential donor’s individual risk factors, an approach some other countries follow with success. As a result, this prohibition, which the American Public Health Association said “is not based in science but appears to be modeled after other countries’ choices and fears,” effectively forbids as many as two million potential donors to give blood, according to an analysis published in 2014 by the Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A. School of Law.

This past summer, the F.D.A. began the process of reconsidering its one-year policy.

Trump and the congressional GOP should stop the FDA from endangering the blood supply. That is more important than homosexuals feeling good about their "lifestyle".

STDs among gays is still many times higher than the heterosexual population.

I remember all the people dying before this policy was in place. Many hemophiliac young boys died. Many wonderful people who just needed a blood transfusion for surgery.

We do not want this horrow again. http://ahrp.org/bayer-documents-aids-tainted-blood-killed-thousands-of-hemophiliacs/r

I Abstained From Sex for a Year to Donate Blood (NYT alert)

Homosexuals should *NEVER* be permitted to donate blood. Diseases which are a characteristic of this behavior, can linger for the rest of their lives. A year is nothing for a persistent or viral infection.

You did it for a year. Now you can do it for the rest of your life. Save your soul.

Maybe he just wasn’t getting any anyway...

...cuz he was one fugly butthole?

What this guy misses is that any population with a higher rate of bodily fluids exchange than normal (homos, intravenous drug users) is going to not only incubate the things we know about, but also new things we don't know about, thereby putting blood recipients at unnecessary risk. But, he doesn't care about that... he just feels discriminated against.

And why the overpowering desire to give blood in the first place? If I was told I couldn’t give blood because I like eating squid, for example, it would be no skin off my nose. And I wouldn’t go around trying to convince everyone and myself that eating squid is normal. I wouldn’t march in squid pride parades and demand grade school children be taught squid tolerance. But then again, it’s just a habit of mine. I don’t want to shove it in anyone else’s face.

I remember hearing doctors at my bedsite debate whether to give me another blood transfusion because of the risks. This was back in the 80’s when tainted blood was starting to infect our blood supply and not yet being effectively screened

No one wants to get AIDS just so you can feel altruistic. 1.7% of the population not being in the blood supply chain is not an issue.

Not just STDs, but STDs that have become resistant to all forms of treatment.

The queers continue to commit sodomy while on antibiotics, spreading the bacteria that is the last to die from the antibiotics, which have bacterial “children” that inherit the resistance.

And they mix with others who are doing the same.

And so on.

They’ve created superbacteria, especially in their typically weakened immune systems.

It’s microevolution at its most basic.

The queers will be the vector of the next plague that kills much of mankind.

Let them donate ... to other fags.

Else label and idenify the blood and let them face civil and criminal penalties for the transmission of AIDS via their donation

This doesn’t read like he donated blood to save lives. It reads like he donated blood to make a political point. I find that sad, and at least somewhat dangerous for those who receive his blood. Can’t liberals ever do good because it’s good, or is that inability part of today’s definition for “liberal”.

"What was once a death sentence is now a treatable condition."

So what he is saying is that AIDS is no big deal and we're all haters if we'd rather not catch it from him?

Let’s not forget that then Governor of Arkansas BILL CLINTON had AIDS infected prisoners donate infected blood which caused lots of hemophiliacs die from the disease.

I have kin who, even today, must be monitored closely because in the 1980s, they had surgery and used donated blood from an unknown source.
