Famed giant sequoia with drive-thru tunnel topples in storm

CALAVERAS COUNTY, Calif. (AP) — A giant sequoia tree known for the huge tunnel carved through it has toppled during California’s weekend storms.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the historic Pioneer Cabin in Calaveras Big Trees State Park in Calaveras County came down during heavy rains on Sunday. A Facebook post from the Calaveras Big Trees Association confirmed the news.

I drove through there in 68 going between LA and Portland. I just did it to do it really, could have avoid most of the park but decided to do it and to this day I’m certainly glad I did, it’s up there with the Grand Canyon that’s for sure.

I rode through that hole with my parents in 1961. The tree looked great then. Death and considerable degeneration have happened since.

In the comments there is a picture of a group of people sitting in front of that tree before the hole was mad; the inner root system was already dead and no attachment to the ground. The hole just outlined and opened up a little on what was already happening to that tree. The way it was probably gave people the idea to make the hole to begin with.
