"Duterte threatens to throw corrupt officials out of a helicopter — and says he’s done it before"

In his latest controversial statement, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, known for his bloody anti-drug war that has killed thousands, threatened to throw corrupt officials out of a helicopter, saying he has done it before, to a kidnapper, and won't hesitate to do so again.

“I will pick you up in a helicopter to Manila, and I will throw you out on the way,” Duterte said in Tagalog in front of a crowd in the Camarines Sur province Tuesday, according to GMA News. “I've done it before. Why would I not do it again?”

Two questions:
1. Can we make this happen here?
2. Do we have enough helicopters? Maybe we can borrow some extras from Canada..

Things seem to be so bad there that many people don’t care, dead scumbags are fine with them. Previous leaders did nothing so a psychopath (or pretend psychopath?) seems like a viable solution to desperate people.

You sound like you have lived here (I am in Davao City) and you have gotten a feel for how they think.
Previous leaders, for decades, essentially did nothing. My wife tells me too much money was changing hands. They would get precious little relief, and due process from the injustice system, so you are right, a few dead scum bags mean nothings to them.

I’m with you. Given that this is from the Compost, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Anyone know what his poll numbers are? Is he popular with the general public?

Has anybody checked to make sure this guy isn’t really Adam Sandler or Sasha Baron Cohen?

At the very least, he seems like great “karate movie” material.

Biased press reports. Obama planned to have a wife of a CIA agent win, and Duterte stepped in the last minute. Recent leaks show they then planned to get him removed.

His friendliness with China is the result of this.

Duterte said this stuff; go after the Philippine press, otherwise, your arguments are weak.

So, the CIA made Duterte said he threw people out of helicopters. What idiocy.

Just so Duterte isn’t giving service to the Chinese while he kills his own people. Doh.

Duterte said this, unless one can prove otherwise, that’s all that is at stake, not who is living in Davao.

These people say it’s propaganda, well show us where, it’s reported in the Philippine press, so there. It’s probably on tape too.

Totally disingenuous to now, blame the US for Duterte’s words, intellectually dishonest. Shameful.

Is he popular with the general public?

Extremely popular. Maybe more so than when he was first elected, because he is draining the swamp.
He sacked the director of the NBI (their FBI) along with several high ranking people, for being on the drug cartel payroll. The people have had their fill of corrupt government officials.

Likewise, my wife is from NW Mindanao. She was afraid of Duterte before the election, but likes him now, since she has seen he gets things done. Since the May election, she has watched YouTube videos every day to keep up with the latest news from the Philippines.

People usually judge the politics of other nations and cultures through an American lens, which is ridiculous. It's the same naive impulse that has guided failed attempts at "nation building" in the Middle East and beyond.

Our system of Constitutional balance of power and individual liberty really isn't for export, because in developing countries without a strong economy and civil society, such personal liberties would just be a recipe for anarchy, or as you (Tijeras) note, descent into a narco-state on account of a power vacuum.

A thuggish dictator would be a disaster for the US for for any developed country. I've come to the conclusion that anything but a thuggish dictator is usually a disaster for developing countries.

No, I’ve never been to the country.

That’s just the impression I got from everything I’ve heard and read, sounds like I might be on the mark.

As evidenced by his increasingly infantile acts in his remaining days as (presumed) Caliph, odumbo has been very active in discrediting Duterte at every step, with the assist of the kneepadded media.

We get here the same kind of reporting that we've been getting since clinton x-42 ... all world news is filtered through the socialist and now muslim lens of lies and what we the people get (except for those of us active in LOOKING for the truth), is a watered down (at best) version of the truth.

I remember when I visited my fiancee' in 2009 (now my beloved asawa .. ) and being very vocal against odumbo ... and about half of whom heard me understood and nodded approval or assent.

Duterte is reported recently of having said he would burn down the UN and a number of anti Duterte posters here in FR have commented favorably (now) that maybe this Duterte guy ain't so bad after all.

Duterte denies ever throwing someone out of a helicopter:

http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/29/asia/philippines-duterte-helicopter-denial/index.html
“We had no helicopter. We don’t use that,” he said. He described the incident as “just the creative imagination of this Tulfo.”

Duterte did not clarify who Tulfo was, but he could have been referring to a number of journalists with the same surname.”

What bothered me is he should not speak of anything like this, I know kidnappers probably are the scum of the earth.

Well stated bro. Unfortunately, I believe you are correct. As bad as a thuggish dictator is, and I do think they are bad, often times, that is the only thing that works in these third world countries.
Many Americans, including Freepers, think the rest of the world thinks like Americans. I did too, until I started living in the Philippines. Actually, I knew, before I got here, but I can absolutely guarantee you, they don't. I wish they did, but they don't. Maybe that's the biggest reason nation building doesn't work.
