Hillary Clinton felt compelled to run for president despite lacking a clear campaign vision, Vice President Joe Biden argued in an interview published Thursday.
“I don’t think she ever really figured it out,” Biden told the Los Angeles Times’ Mike Memoli. “And by the way, I think it was really hard for her to decide to run.” Biden said Clinton likely felt obliged to run for president and that the historic nature of her bid weighed on her decision-making.
“She thought she had no choice but to run. That, as the first woman who had an opportunity to win the presidency, I think it was a real burden on her,” Biden said.
Thursday’s interview was the latest assessment from the Obama administration about why Democrats fared so poorly in this year’s vote. Biden, along with President Barack Obama, have argued their party didn’t pay enough attention to working-class voters outside large urban centers.
Biden — who said in the interview he, like Obama, was planning to remain living part-time in Washington after January — said voters were looking for a candidate who could connect to their struggles.
“I believe that we were not letting an awful lot of people — high school-educated, mostly Caucasian, but also people of color — know that we understood their problems,” he said.
He claimed to the LA Times there’s “a bit of elitism that’s crept in” to Democratic thinking.
“What are the arguments we’re hearing? ‘Well, we’ve got to be more progressive.’ I’m not saying we should be less progressive,” Biden said. “We should be proud of where the hell we are, and not yield an inch.
“In the meantime, you can’t eat equality,” he added.

Biden might be right that Hillary “might have felt compelled.”
Probably she felt compelled because there was nobody else among the Democrats.
The GOP had a lot of fine, young candidates (whom I might have preferred over Trump, but that’s a moot point). But why in tarnation wasn’t there anyone else in the Democratic camp besides Hillary? Except Bernie, who was kind of an outlier.
No one under 60? I don’t get it.
She was running for one reason:
She wanted to go down in history as the first female president.
Obama denied her that in 2008, as he got his place in history — until a full black runs and wins.
Trump denied her that in 2016, but she did get to be the first major party female nominee.
Other than that, she is pretty much an asterick in the annals of presidental campaign history.

He’s been there since he was in his 30’s and it’s time for him to go back to where he came from and stay there. There’s something wrong with someone who just can’t say “I’m done and I’m outta here.” Well, it’s no surprise when it comes to Biden. There has definitely been something wrong with him for an awful lot of years.

In the beginning, because she wanted to be the first woman president. In the end it was because she owed people. Neither reason benefitted ordinary citizens.
