Free to join? Some are lost enough to fall for anything as , most often islam increases under extreme duress, as in saving your life and then you can never ever change your mind and leave, except by death, which the most extreme are more then willing to help arrange for you. It is a supremacist ideology, freedom has nothing to do with it.
You need to read Scott Orson Card's article on why Islam is not a religion - not to ding your statement which is correct about who can join, but to realize that a "religion" that holds its members by threat of death is no religion. It was on FR a long time ago and was very interesting.

FYI: The first Given Half is mostly plagiarized from the Bible and the Torah - it gained Mohammad only around 150 followers. With the Second Given Half, Sharia was solidified, the First Given Half nullified, gained Mohammad 10s of thousand of followers, proceeded to murder millions (hundreds of which Mohammad personally beheaded, destroyed Classical Western Civilization, made women non-entities, and made the gift of slavery big business for hundreds of years.
A nice ‘religion’ the fruits of which we are still coping with, and if not equally vicious and brutal will succumb.
