Star Wars isn’t political, says Disney chief responding to boycott by Trump supporters. He’s wrong.

At the Saturday premiere of the latest Star Wars film, “Rogue One,” Disney chief executive Bob Iger offered a curious reading of the upcoming movie. This entry to the behemoth science fiction franchise was not political, he said. At all.

“Frankly, this is a film that the world should enjoy. It is not a film that is, in any way, a political film,” Iger said to the Hollywood Reporter. “There are no political statements in it, at all.” He added that he was “very proud” of the diversity of the cast but that, too, was “not a political statement, at all.”

Iger was eager to play down political tensions in a fictional far-off galaxy because he had been asked to respond to an all-too-real boycott percolating through social media: Dump Star Wars. “I think the whole story has been overblown and, quite frankly, it’s silly,” Iger said to the Hollywood Reporter. “I have no reaction to [this] story at all.”

The film’s ending was reshot to undermine President-elect Donald Trump, according to boycotters. Disney poured millions of dollars into the movie to give “Rogue One” subliminal, anti-Trump messages. If you voted for Trump, well, the minds behind Disney’s Star Wars hated you.

ROTFLMAO!!!

However, the Genesis Planet was destroyed in Star Trek III, not Star Trek IV.

Thank you. I just binge watched all six last cold and snowy Saturday, so your explanation makes perfect sense!

I haven’t paid to see a “Star Wars” movie since I got taken by “The Phantom Menace,” although I did check the next two out of the library for free on DVD and fast-forwarded through them in about 15 minutes. After that, I was done. So I can’t say I’m “boycotting” this one, just avoiding it like the last one. I think “outgrown” is the proper term.

While some of the accusations about the film’s content are obviously incorrect or overblown, the filmmakers brought it on themselves. They can’t complain that Republicans think it’s slanted against them when they send out tweets that combine Star Wars logos with anti-Trump memes, and when the screenwriter draws deliberate parallels between the plot and the election. Hollywood liberals just can’t help themselves: if they have any forum, they use it to broadcast their hatred and contempt for Republicans, even if it alienates half the target audience.

Personally, I always assumed that since the Empire was a totalitarian thought-control movement to put everybody under one big central government, headed by a cold, iron-fisted dictator, then it represented Hillary and her ilk. And the rebels, being a bunch of freedom-craving, skirt-chasing, gun-toting, money-loving entrepreneurs who hate rules and regulations, represented Republicans. Chewbacca even has hair kind of like Donald Trump’s.

When they make one on par with what are now known as Episodes IV and V, then I might be inclined to go see another. Being as the last five films were quite underwhelming, I don’t see that happening.

great recap. imho missing only that han 1.0 and leah 1.0 have the chemistry of a divorced couple meeting by accident at a local costco. slow and painful to watch scenes in abundance.

I’m reading more reviews and i think i may be wrong and this movie may actually be very very good, its coming off to me more like one of those many after Pearl Harbor movies that came out, when men were men and were ready to die for freedom, for the cause. That the enemy no matter how big, how many, or how terrible they were didn’t mean they could not be defeated.

Make the Galaxy great again here? Looks like its sending the right message, and no Jar Jar Binks as a POTUS or something either. Or Ewoks. Yeah i think its worth the theater ticket.

After I saw the original Star Wars in a theater as a young girl, when friends would talk about who was cuter Luke or Hon Solo (sp?)I wasn’t into either of em, preferring the mysterious and somehow sympathetic Darth Vader instead.

Except for Jon Snow, who is most definitely a man :) I just hope his being crowned is not a bad omen as it was for his bro (or cuz) as the producers did say they wanted the scene to mimic that one and we should be “worried about it.” Or something like that....

Star Wars was almost very political. Lucas tried hard when Phantom Menace came out. He went so far as to go master race too.

Examples of politics: all of the bad guys, the people fighting the Republic were business people. There was the main baddies (backed by the Sith) who were the Trade Federation. Their supporters included the Techno Union, The Trade Guilds etc. Get it? People who want to make money are bad.

Now look at the good guys; The Jedi - who are ‘selfless’ only do for others and have no possessions at all. (Communists working for the people

I know - I love Star Trek, Star Wars and anm a sci fi nut, but if you are you can see what was tried as well.

On master face BS - well up until Phantom Menace, the Force was more spiritual. Some were stronger in the force but in this movie we find that it is not based on training - it is based on the amount of midichlorians that you ahve in your cells. Hence - a Master race. The more you have ( like Anakin) the stronger you are in the force.

Forget the Prequel Trilogy, he tried politics as far back as A New Hope back before it got that name when he wrote the movie to be, of all things, pro-Vietcong/anti-American involvement in the Vietnam War propaganda, with the Empire being America and the Rebels being the Vietcong (and the Ewoks being Vietcong in an even more explicit manner). Heck, Leia’s characterization in the final film was due to Lucas wanting to bring about solidarity to Second-Wave Feminism, and in fact, it was the byproduct of a prior attempt at making Luke into a girl (originally, Leia WAS closer to the classic Disney Princess model, spoiled sweet, even if she WAS ultimately meant to represent Vietcong from the start.).

Even though I know Bob Iger’s spewing bullcrap regarding his denials that it is not politics (and if he truly was going to claim it wasn’t politics, he should have fired Weitz and Witta when they made those tweets against Trump, you know, to at least keep up the illusion they are politically neutral. I know I would have fired them if I were in his position.), we shouldn’t be naïve as to think they started pushing politics with The Force Awakens, or even that Disney was the cause of it. Star Wars always pushed leftist politics in its films, even back in the Original Trilogy. The Original Trilogy was a bit more subtle about it.

That all being said, I’m still hesitant to see Rogue One, not until I’m absolutely sure that it’s not going to pull anything on me.

SW in the past was political, though it was pretty well hidden, I dare anybody who hasn’t heard Coppola go on about how it was a parable for Viet Nam to actually see it that way (yes Coppola was involved in the script). But now it’s owned by Disney who dropped 4 billion bucks on it, they aren’t going to take those risks. Looking forward to it, Friday morning.

Yeah, it’s telling how fake news rolls. Some idiots made some declaration based on zero facts and BOOM a story is born.

Well, Blue Bloods, for one. I also don’t recall Eleanor Bishop from NCIS being a martial artist.

Anyways, I could tolerate 130 lb. women with A cups (I presume you mean “A cups”, since having “D cups” implies they have extremely large breasts, large enough to leave even Barbie envious) physically destroying 4 or 5 men so long as there’s an actual plausible reason for them doing so. Like, for example, Kara Danvers/Kara Zor El/Supergirl pulling off such a feat is at least justified due to her being a Kryptonian, NOT a human, and grew up on a planet with gravity surpassing that of Earth. Likewise, Ariel from The Little Mermaid pulling off such a feat would also be justified since she was born and raised under the sea, and merpeople would evidently have a lot more endurance, strength, and speed than an Olympian athlete due to the intense water pressure. If it’s someone who’s a bookworm and is not the type to get into significant athletic activities pulling that kind of stuff, no way, no how is that even REMOTELY justifiable.

To me, the ultimate foray into politics was in Episode 3, when Anakin said to Obi Wan "If you're not with me, then you're my enemy".

To me, this was a direct shot at Bush and "If you're not with us, you're with the terrorists", equating him with Darth Vader and the Dark Side.

The author of that book Allfather Saga responded to an email from me and he/she (not sure if C.K. is a man or woman) said he is in talks about his series being made into a movie or TV show. If you love conservative principles check this out. I posted al ink here about it. He said Trump built the wall, saved America and had Drudge and Breitbart that helped. Here’s a few links - look at the map of one of the continents of this fantasy novel. Notice Rush Limbaugh, Milo from Breitbart, a continent named Breitbart and one named Drudge. The books (I read all 3 ) were the most political and entertaining at hte same time that I have read all year. For some of the maps... http://www.whatfinger.com/single-post/2016/10/30/Drudge-and-Breitbart-Have-Continents-Named-After-Them-They-Saved-America

I was thinking the same thing. There are lots of little attacks on Bush like that. These Hollywood liberal types lose their litttle minds and think we don’t notice.

Stopped watching NCIS because every woman was superwoman...and every muslim was noble.

I quit when the team responded to a male Marine's house whose "husband" had been murdered.

The thought of Leroy Jethro Gibbs not at least rolling his eyes at the mention of a Marine "husband" was too much to take.

The last star wars film was atrocious. A total rehash of the previous movies and when the villian took off his mask he was a total metro-sexual, I almost burst out laughing. I am 100% done with the star wars empire, so are my kids. They thought the previous movie sucked as well.
