It sounded like great news when Carrier said last week that it would invest millions in the Indiana plant it decided to keep in the U.S.
The company's deal with President-elect Donald Trump to keep a furnace plant from moving to Mexico also calls for a $16 million investment in the facility. But that has a big down side for some of the workers in Indianapolis.
Most of that money will be invested in automation said to Greg Hayes, CEO of United Technologies, Carrier's corporate parent. And that automation will replace some of the jobs that were just saved.
"We're going to...automate to drive the cost down so that we can continue to be competitive," he said on an interview on CNBC earlier this week.
"Is it as cheap as moving to Mexico with lower cost labor? No. But we will make that plant competitive just because we'll make the capital investments there.
But what that ultimately means is there will be fewer jobs."
The decision to keep Carrier's furnace manufacturing operations in the U.S. instead of moving them to Mexico will save about 800 jobs out of the 1,400 at the plant, at least in the near term. The company declined to say how many of the plants 800 remaining jobs could be lost to automation, or when.

Ah, they’re still pissing in the cornflakes over this, I see. Just got to drag it down, can’t have domestic, private sector jobs saved, that goes against the mantra of both Democrats and establishment Republicans.
Of course automation will happen eventually but the point is those jobs have been saved. CNN(fake news site) is turning this into a negative, which its not.
I have a problem with some of those details. But my prob has nothing to do with automation.
And what about Labor Unions and Obama and Dems pushing for 15.00 minimum wage where fast food places will just put computers in place for ordering and paying vs. workers. Guess that is ok with them.
THAT’S IT TRUMP IS FINISHED!!!
Is it too early to call this “The Failed Trump Administraton”?
800 jobs saved and the union is bitching. Communism at it’s finest. Everyone gets a job or no one gets a job.
Schadenboner. An extreme degree of pleasure from the misfortune of Never Trump A$$holes whining, crying and moaning after Trumps victory..
They want him to fail even if it means loss of American jobs and morale. CNN/s role is to push the lie that nothing a conservative does will make things better.
CNN brings out the microscope for Republicans... while never looking closely at ObamaCare, Obama or his faults. No, it's FAKE NEWS ALL THE WAY. FAKE GOOD FOR DEMOCRATS... FAKE ALWAYS DEMORALIZING FOR REPUBLICANS.
CNN fakes to discourage the American people, the Stock Market and any feelings of hope citizens might have that the country can get back on the right track... and they wonder why people don't trust the press?
Please note that what Carrier was going to move was a furnace plant, not an a/c plant. I am not sure where they manufacture a/c units.
People also have to install, maintain, program them, last I checked. Unless AI is completely taking over.
Unions would rather have salary cuts for everyone instead of performance raises based on merit. They can win back the cuts another time but performance raises changes the entire system
They’ll need American maintenance crews.
Rosy the robot diodes light up.
Or the people who maintain them?
Back around the turn of the last century about 80% of the people worked on farms, today it’s less than 4%.
The people who build, program, and maintain automated machinery and equipment make little more than production workers. I don’t know of one US company that manufacturers an industrial robot. All of the ones that I used to work with came out of Japan, china, korea, or sweden.
Carrier, like a lot of companies in the manufacturing sector, have to source their input materials from foreign sources. And they have to compete against government subsidized foreign slave labor.
Also, how many HVAC equipment manufacturers still produce 100%
of their product in the US?
Or, how much of ANY US manufactured product has more than 75% US sourced component content?
Lol,
Trump to announce 25% tarrif on goods produced by companies who choose to automate and thereby reduce US jobs. They can automate if they want to, but there will be consequences.
That’s what they will be using the tax breaks for.
"United Technologies said it would close its Carrier air conditioning and heating plant in Indianapolis and move its manufacturing to Mexico. The plant's workers would have been laid off over three years starting in 2017."
I found this much on Wikipedia:
Carrier has U.S. manufacturing facilities in Indianapolis, Indiana, for residential and commercial furnaces and air handlers; Collierville, Tennessee, for residential condensing units and heat pumps; Tyler, Texas, for residential package units and commercial condensing and package units; Monterrey, Mexico for evaporator coils; and Charlotte, North Carolina, for accessories and chillers.
