Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel met with President-elect Donald Trump in New York on Wednesday morning, using the discussion to urge Trump to reconsider his positions on immigration.
During his 45-minute meeting with the president-elect in his personal office high above Manhattan in Trump Tower, Emanuel hand-delivered a letter from the mayors of some of the nation's largest cities urging Trump to continue protections offered to young immigrants instituted under President Barack Obama's administration.
The two-page letter asked Trump to continue Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the provision that protects young, so-called Dreamers who came to the country before the age of 16 from deportation and allows them to study and work in the U.S.
"I delivered to the president-elect and his senior adviser and his chief of staff a letter signed by 14 mayors that, uh, put together from across the country, about our DACA students. And that they were working hard towards the American Dream," Emanuel told reporters in the Trump Tower lobby following the meeting.
"And all of us fundamentally believe that those are students, those are also people that want to join the armed forces. They gave their name, their address, their phone number, where they are. They are trying to achieve the American Dream, no fault of their own, their parents came here. They are something we should hold up and embrace," the mayor added.
Emanuel has said that reversing DACA would amount to a "bait-and-switch" on those young immigrants who have trusted the government by stepping forward and offering their personal information.
The discussion between Emanuel and Trump was scheduled to last 30 minutes but went on for 45 minutes, according to a source familiar with the meeting who was not authorized to speak publicly. Emanuel met with Trump, the president-elect's chief strategist, Steve Bannon,

EXCERPT:
But in an interview with Time magazine, Trump appeared to leave the door open to leaving some version of DACA in place.
“I want Dreamers for our children also,” Trump said. “We’re going to work something out. On a humanitarian basis it’s a very tough situation. We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud. But that’s a very tough situation.”
As far as I know, Trump’s professed objective all along is to rid the country of America hating troublemakers and keep them out. Hence Rahm Emanuel is a prime candidate for banishment from our midst.
This turd needs to gtfo.
I’m just chuckling away....Trump’s got everyone by the...and they don’t even know it.
He and Algore arrived hat-in-hand...BOTH left with hand-over-butt...
My guess.....
I hope trump put that letter someplace the sun doesn’t shine.
Rahm, get on board the Trump train and maybe we’ll not ignore that your city is imploding.
Its getting cold and I bet Trump has a nice fireplace, so that letter might be useful to light ‘er off.
DACA was a two year amnesty program with ability to renew every two years, started in 2012. There was no promise it was permanent and like everything else Obama did, the program is readily erased. They should have been studying spanish pretty hard during the past four years.
Trump can’t get any significant legislation passed unless he can peel off 8-10 democrat senate votes to break a filibuster. He’s going to hold dreamers as a bargaining chip for negotiations. If legalizing dreamers gives us e-verify, the wall, 10000 more border patrol, new visa tracking system, banning sanctuary cities, banning refugees, you take the deal.
Even his crude remark of a decade or so ago was a kind of prophetic metaphor. God had been hinting to this guy for a long time, I betcha. Hey Donald. This is about more than the women. Hey Donald. Hey Donald.
But anyhow, I think Donald may have gone to Rahm with his “uniting hope” and asked Rahm, with your proposal, how can we fit this into something that is a gain for America too? And lefty pablum won’t hack it. He has to actually make a case. Which would have to involve keeping the productive people and sending the bums back... no other way about it.
Dreamers will have to be waker-uppers too.
“They are trying to achieve the American Dream”
Hey, Dead Fish: some of us would like to have the American Dream back, and it doesn’t involve flooding the country with millions and millions of third-worlders.
Did this criminal dreg explain to President-elect Trump why his citizens in chicago are murdering each other?
Unless Trump put a bullet between his eyes I consider the meeting a failure...
Now just wait. Donald has a way of coming up with “a deal you cannot refuse.”
Naw....Rahm sent Trump a letter...he responded. It gets the guy out of his hair.
“a letter from the mayors of some of the nation’s largest cities”
The places that voted overwhelmingly against Trump...
Yes, of course, he needs to favor the people who voted against him over the people who voted for him. Sure, that makes sense.
