Durbin, Graham Statement on Trump Comments on DREAMers
U.S. Senators Dick Durbin ^ | 12.07.16 | U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

Posted on 12/07/2016 1:21:35 PM PST by mdittmar

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) released the following statement on comments made to Time magazine by President-elect Donald Trump, who said, “We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud. They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in never-never land because they don’t know what’s going to happen.”

“We’re encouraged by these comments by President-elect Trump — they present an opportunity to do the right thing for more than 744,000 young people who grew up here. There is bipartisan support for this in the Senate and we will soon have a legislative response ready if needed.  They have much to contribute to the country they love.”

Send them back to the countries they belong to so that they can share with the people there what they have gained and learned here. Then their own countries will begin to prosper. Everyone wins.

BUT they will NEVER be able to vote if they’re here 100 years. That’s their punishment for themselves and their heirs also.

They got trolled - Trump made some remark, and they rush right out and publicly shoot themselves in the foot. Gotta love it.

I’m for illegals having to leave immediately but - like it or not we allowed these kids to grow up here. Most of them would not be able to function if forced to go back to mexico or Guatemala. I have lived down there and I can tell you it would be really cruel.

So flame away but I think they should be allowed to stay. Not given citizenship - just permanent residence. Unless they marry or serve in the military.

Also - if they have a felony criminal record - send them back.

They should be given the Mexican rights for similar circumstances, not one inch better. I don’t know what that would be but I am sure Mexico would not let them stay in their country and would not care about their future.

Why should we be bleeding hearts for their parents audacity to come here and stick us with burdens and problems without our prior permission?

“I think they should be allowed to stay”

Hell no.

This is a straight utilitarian exercise: you start making `act’ exceptions to the rule and every (free) lawyer and his client will be demanding exceptions.

This is the disgraceful situation we have now, e.g. aliens being coached to lie that they are political exiles.

As you admit, they are here illegally. Our immigration laws were designed to make America a better place, not to educate, medicate, feed, clothe and house anyone who was able to sneak into our country in violation of our laws.

Americans are fed up with open borders, cheap labor and foreign border jumpers, many of them criminals.

If they have received an education, courtesy of American taxpayers, maybe they can make Mexicola a better place.

All resident foreign nationals here illegally—back you go, all of you.

Maybe the DREAMERs (I really dislike that Durbin euphemism btw) could receive some dispensation, if they apply—after returning to their own country—for immigration status, waiting in line like everyone else; by `dispensation”, their application isn’t automatically tossed like those of adult applicants who tried to skirt our laws.

The truth is that not all of them were brought here at an early age, some of them are adults that have only been here for a few years.

I agree with you as far as the ones that have truly grown up here, but as I just posted, a lot of them are adults that have only been here a few years.

Don’t kid yourself. If they are allowed to stay they’ll be voting (overwhelmingly for Democrats) before we know it.

From August 17, 2015:

“Bolded in his newly released plan on how Donald Trump would solve our country’s immigration problems if he becomes president is a suggestion to triple the number of law-enforcement agents working to guard the border.

“That and other measures Trump proposes — including deporting immigrants convicted of a crime and detaining and deporting immigrants caught crossing the border illegally — would amount to a significant increase in deportation. An estimated 11 million immigrants are in the country illegally.

“Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump released a detailed immigration plan, and its “great, great wall” is just the beginning. (Gillian Brockell/The Washington Post)

“And during an appearance Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump seemed to suggest he would kick out most immigrants who are in the country illegally. Here’s a transcript (The Fix boss annotated it, too!):

TRUMP: The executive order gets rescinded. One good thing about —

TODD: You’ll rescind that one, too? You’ll rescind the Dream Act executive order, the DACA?

TRUMP: We have to make a whole new set of standards. And when people come in, they have to come in —

TODD: You’re going to split up families. You’re going to deport children?

TRUMP: Chuck — no, no. No, we’re going to keep the families together. We have to keep the families together.

TODD: But you’re going to kick them out?

TRUMP: They have to go.

TODD: What if they have no place to go?

TRUMP: We will work with them. They have to go. Chuck, we either have a country or we don’t have a country. Either we have a country or not.”

As Trump said, “they have to go.”

The American government did. It is an outrage. But the government allowed it -- in fact, encouraged it.

Trump’s comments are troubling, but if this is what he has to give on to get the rest of his immigration policy through, then I suppose so be it.

I just hope their “working something out” at least includes no pathway to citizenship and immediate deportation of any criminals, even if they came here at 2.
