White House: ‘embittered’ World War II veterans should get over Pearl Harbor

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said during a press conference Monday it was natural for World War II veterans to be “embittered” about Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to Pearl Harbor, but they should get over it for the sake of America.

It was announced Monday that Abe will be the first Japanese leader to visit Pearl Harbor since it was hit by a surprise attack that killed 2,403 Americans and brought the U.S. into World War II. The visit reciprocates President Barack Obama’s visit to Hiroshima earlier this year for the anniversary of the atomic bomb attack on the city.

Abe said in a short statement he would pray for those who died in the war, but gave no indication he would express regret for Japan’s surprise attack.

During a White House press briefing Monday, Earnest was asked whether veterans may be offended by Abe’s visit if he expressed no regret over the attack.

Earnest responded by saying veterans may very well feel “embittered,” especially if they personally fought in World War II.

“If I were a World War II veteran who was drafted by the United States military to go and fight for our country overseas in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack, I might feel quite embittered, and I think it would be a perfectly natural and understandable human reaction to not be particularly satisfied with the words of the Japanese Prime Minister,” Earnest said.

And the kicker, Japanese are known to be some of the biggest racists on the planet. No apologies for that either Abe ?

The U.S. did bomb Tokyo. Operation Meetinghouse — an incendiary bombing raid over Tokyo, was carried out in March 1945. I believe there were more civilians killed in that bombing than in either Nagasaki or Hiroshima.

... he mentioned somebody from his town committed suicide because they wouldn't allow him to enlist. It was a different time.

Or maybe they had a good reason to reject him when he tried to enlist, and he went out and proved their point.

Years ago I used to organize an annual Pearl Harbor Day rally on Courthouse Square in Dayton. I'd get the necessary permits. I'd advertise it with local veterans organizations, and we'd get a good turnout. We regularly got people from the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association to take part in the rally.

I'd always get interviewed by the local paper. I made a point of saying that the Japan of today is not the Japan of 1941, and we should not blame today's Japan for what happened back then. Our rally was a patriotic and pro-defense event, not an anti-Japan event. We were rallying for a strong defense, not against Japan.

One year December 7th fell during a visit to the US by Nikita Krushchev. I told the reporter that we weren't holding an anti-Soviet event, but I thought he would have done better to come at some other time.

“Well, then ALL people who have had a “bitter” past should “Get over it” right? Put the Confederate flag back up and tell everybody to “get over it”, let me know how that works for you.”

Exactly.

Over the years, Southerners have been forced to let go of their honor of the Confederacy and ancestors killed in the Civil War.

Our schools, North and South even promote the idea that it is an affront to Americans that anyone honor the Confederacy.

It was true, wasn't it?

No.

If you read anything about WWII in the Philippines you knew that.

Perhaps they don't study history in Canada.

“drafted”?? The lefty is trying to rewrite history (no surprise). The draft was unnecessary, as the armed services had more volunteers than they could handle, in fact there were lotteries with the winners being accepted to serve.

Glad that you caught that.

I'm surprised that this clown didn't talk about how shocked all of the Americans of that era must have been when when they saw the "tape" of the strafing "Japanese jets" on the 11 o'clock news that same evening.

Regards,

I lived in Japan from 1958-1963 and lived off the air base. I have an education that one cannot buy.

I thought you were referring to Pearl Harbor. My mistake.

Perhaps they don't study history in Canada.

Uh -- whut?

Both of my parents were WWII veterans.

Same here: Father was flying "over the hump" (the Himalayas) on B-17s held together with baling wire and carrying tons of high-explosives, Mother (still going strong at 94) was stationed in Britain and then, after V-E Day, in Berlin.

What we have become in this nation is a mockery for those who fought and often died as well as citizens who sacrificed their lives and livelihood to help make this country great, May God help us to return to those values.

Amen, brother!

Embittered blacks should get over slavery.

When we dis boarded they were asked why they were crying.

Did you know that the Navy will bury shipmates at the Arizona? They take the ashes and divers place them in the hull of the ship. I saw one of the ceremonies somewhere on TV don't recall exactly who showed it.
