A 35% tax on imports would raise prices for consumers and hurt many manufacturers that use imports in their products. It would also start a trade war that would cost jobs in export industries.

It’s a rigged agreement. China is already at a Trade War with us. They charge our products a trade tariff. And they manipulate their currency if we sell them too much. What part of that do you fail to understand???

Please take your fake news site the NY Slimes and post it on D.U. where it belongs.

There is definitely a segment of “American” conservatives in China’s pocket. Just as there are a segment of democrats also. SOLD OUT.

That is what the voters rejected, one month ago.

They had their chance. Now we will rebuild our own country, for a change.

Just saying.

The president doesn’t need permission from congress to impose tariffs or withdraw from trade deals.

This is just more fake news from the NY Times.

No it wouldn't. This isn't a general tariff.

I don’t disagree with the GOP leadership on this right now. There are a lot of things right here in the U.S. that have to be fixed before tariffs are even considered. It’s one thing to use a tariff to remedy an unfair trade practice, but we shouldn’t use tariffs to mask serious inefficiencies and dysfunction in our own economic system.

You don’t start deals by giving the other side everything it wants. This is a fundamental that our guys in the US House better learn...and fast! You start negotiations from the far right—not the center. The goal is to move things your direction. Again, our representatives better start learning, because all I’ve seen from them in the last 8 years is surrender to Obama and the left!

Reaching across the aisle? That’s not supposed to be the default position. Spit! Let the Democrats reach across the aisle to the RIGHT!

How predictable that this would be posted.

Tariffs work. There has to be a stick as well as a carrot.

US tariffs are nothing new. For the intellectually inclined, study historical use beginning with The Tariff Act of 1789... the same year our Constitution was written.

Note the chart illustrating the relationship between federal income taxes and tariffs.

No. It would create a domestic incentive for effective competing products, save American jobs and promote American businesses. Paul Ryan and McCarthy are two towering pieces of s***, who will work to undermine Trump at every turn. They are self-centered ghouls sucking the lifeblood of America and AMERICANS in return for campaign handouts from the crony capitalist global corporations which seek liquidation of our borders. Boh of these POS’s should be supporting their party’s choice as president, NOT UDERMINING him. Both McCarthy and Ryan are allies if that other damn POS John Boehner, who did everything possible to make the nightmare of the Obama years even worse,

And I am sick and tired of damn Never Trumpers supporting these idiots. Trump represents a movement not a political party and that movement destroyed the Democrats just ad it will destroy the feckless, pusillanimous Republican establishment represented by these two QUISLINGS.

35 % is a bit high. There would definitely be price increases to offset the tariffs. He may want to take a look at this issue from different perspectives and look for better tactics.

Like the other establishmentarians the GOP believes in a fantasy known as a ‘free market’. It doesn’t exist.

“I don’t want to get into some kind of trade war,” Representative Kevin McCarthy

Trade war with whom ? This tax isn't on a foreign company exporting to the US - such as Chinese company selling their products in the US. It is on a US based company bringing their goods back into the US.

A 35% tax on imports would raise prices.

Oh c'mon. Think of all the high end, designer label, celebrity endorsed merchandise that comes from worker hellholes. The workers endure near slave conditions while elitists, including those involved in global transportation, reap the profits.

“A 35% tax on imports would raise prices for consumers and hurt many manufacturers that use imports in their products.”

Good.

“It would also start a trade war that would cost jobs in export industries.”

The phrase “trade war” has been thrown at us for decades & we lost 70,000 manufacturing plants in the process.

I’m all for short term pain for long term gain. Goodness knows the status quo is 100% unacceptable.

These are American companies. You cannot have a trade war with companies in your own country. Kevin McCarthy is slow.

Our tariffs on imported products should be simple to calculate - it should be the greater of:

A - The total cost of regulations and taxes inflicted on a business if they operated within the US., or

B - An amount equal to the tariff that the sending country imposes on similar US goods.
