LAWRENCE, Mass. A 15-year-old boy charged with killing a high school classmate whose headless body was found near a river said in a police report made public Monday that they had gone to smoke marijuana together and he had last seen the classmate alive.
Mathew Borges was held without bail after pleading not guilty at his brief arraignment in Lawrence District Court on a murder charge. Borges is being prosecuted as an adult, so court proceedings were open. His lawyer, Edward Hayden, did not argue for bail.
The body of 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino was found near the Merrimack River in Lawrence on Thursday by a woman walking her dog. Police recovered his head nearby.
Borges told police that he and Viloria-Paulino had gone to the river on Nov. 18 to smoke pot and later parted ways.
But the police report also said Borges told a witness that he had "done something bad" and that he had "stabbed a kid and cut his head off killing him." Borges was arrested Saturday.
The motive for the killing is unclear and remains under investigation, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. Police recovered evidence at Borges' home, he said.
Both boys were sophomores at Lawrence High School.
Hayden, the defense lawyer, said Borges was a student in good standing with a part-time job. But he said he didn't know enough about the case to comment other than to say Borges is "holding up well as can be expected of someone facing this kind of charge."
Borges is being held at a youth detention facility and is due back in court Jan. 10.
Viloria-Paulino's family has been critical of police, saying they at first said he was just a runaway and took too long to launch an investigation. Police haven't responded to that.

This story has been corrected to show the suspect is 15, not 16, per new information from authorities.
Pothead to meathead.
Which acts do you think a 15 year old can’t commit that an adult can? Does he have the mentality of an adult? Depends on the adult, if age is the only contributing factor in determining adulthood.
I hope the 15-year-old doesn’t lose his head over this situation and stays calm.
Well I did read kind of fast, LOL.
No problem......if i was wrong, I wanted to know. I had to re-read it too.
Given the method of committing the murder was the perp a recent convert to a certain religion of peace?
Kids today.
The gaydar is pinging loudly at those two.
If so, the kid could claim self defense from rape or molestation................
It was a rhetorical question. I think teenagers are completely capable of committing adult crimes and acting like an adult, although they clearly lack experience.
For example why is it that a teenager can be tried as an adult for murder but is "just a child" if they spread their legs and have sex outside of marriage?
Both are natural sins. And I see an inconsistency with what man's law says is right and wrong vs. God's view.
Either a teenage is an adult (A young one I will admit if that is the standard) or they are a child. If a child then they are not responsible for what they do. If an adult then they can make decisions like an adult at any level.
I am only pointing out an inconsistency in the logic here.
I’m going to take a guess that the victim expressed a sexual interest in the perp and the perp freaked.
Mexican cartels behead the competition or those who impede business. It isn’t just a Muslim tactic. Most murderous low-life scum think of it eventually.
That’s possible..............
Except for the de-capitation part...
Goes a bit beyond definitions of self defense.
Sick. They were doing drugs, so I guess they were not thinking properly.
Bingo!
I wonder how many bats are nesting in that boys hair?
