Ford will ask Trump to cut fuel-economy rules, CEO says; 'no demand' for hybrid, electric cars
Green Car Reports ^ | Dec 5, 2016 | Stephen Edelstein

Last week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ruled that existing emissions limits for passenger cars for 2022 through 2025 should remain in place.

It's a decision that is already opposed by lobbyists representing the auto industry, and possibly by the incoming Trump Administration.

Sure enough, one automaker says it has already begun talks with President-elect Donald Trump that include a request for lower emissions targets.

Ford seems to have cars that have eye-pleasing bodies but underwhelming engines for the dollar.

The only reason the Fusion exists is that it’s doing the job that the Taurus should be doing - midtier sedan. In turn, the Taurus is given a turbocharger and being forced to fit the hole made by axing the Panther platform.

I’d rather see them put a V6 in it if not to have another Camry-fighter.

Well......I would own a hybrid of they were the same price as gas cars, and they performed the same.

A hybrid will cost more than the equivalent non-hybrid, simply due to the cost of the additional equipment. Although, someone has pointed out that price difference disappears if you buy a used one.

But, your performance requirement is not difficult to meet. The Acura RLX Hybrid is actually quite a bit faster than the same RLX non-hybrid, in acceleration from 0-60.

There aren't many 4000 lb sedans that will do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds.

Stop the diesel hate:

the Ford Focus with ECOnetic Technology still gets impressive fuel economy of over 70 mpg. The Ford ECOnetic Technology will also be put in the new Ford Focus which will go on sale across Europe this month. The 2012 Ford Fiesta is already Europe’s number one selling small car, and when Ford of Europe’s most fuel-efficient passenger car hits showrooms, it may move the small diesel powered car to the top of the list. Let's hope Ford brings the fuel-stingy diesel to the U.S.

I've worked in and around this industry for over 30 years. The CAFE standards for cars are one thing, but the biggest travesty perpetuated by EPA has been the diesel emissions requirements which have impacted ever American due to our reliance on trucking for transportation.

Look at the graphic below that shows there is no end to the extent to which they will push manufactureres - their stated goal was to make the exhaust from a diesel engine clean enough you could breathe it. The allowed leveles of NOx (oxides of nitrogen) and Particulate Matter (what made the black smoke) have been progressively pushed down year after year, in cahoots with the EU standards. There is never a point at which they were willing to say "OK this is good enough". Instead every Class 8 truck now must carry a reservois of pee (DEF aka urea) that is injected into the exhaust stream. We pay for this insanity.

Nobody likes pollution but there has to be a balance, and the EPA on it's own is incapable of finding it.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid 2010-2012 has 191 horsepower between the Atkinson 2.5 liter engine and the 39 HP electric motor.

It is more powerful than their base engine from those years, and gets solid MPG numbers.

The fuel mileage for standards for heavy trucks needs to go, too.

Well, a little bit of reasonable science (not crony science) would help. Ethanol uses much more energy than it saves. Get rid of it! Electric and hybrid cars also use more energy than they save. Let people buy them if they want to, but don’t subsidize them or force anyone to provide electricity for them.

Do we need an EPA? Well, maybe. But it should be cut by about 90% and do a reasonable job, if that is possible with our government and the way so many people have been educated about the “environment” or will take payoffs to do stupid things. I believe in protecting the environment, but in a reasonable way. I’m not sure if that’s possible, but maybe we should at least try it. As things are now, the EPA is wasteful, and more destructive of the environment than helpful.

You couldn’t have it more wrong. Tariffs are complete BS as are “fuel economy standards.” You’re not interested in letting the market decide. EPA regulations and tariffs are both anti-market.

Trade deficits have nothing whatsoever to do with tariffs. Trade deficits are meaningless, a fake “problem.” They are not a problem in any way, shape or form. If a consumer wants to buy a product from overseas, that is their right and their choice. The only problem would come from restricting and punishing that choice with a tariff.

Ouch. But, it looks like SUV ran the red light, unless the opposing traffic still had the green.

However, that's actually the previous NSX. It ended production in 2005.

The candidate who praised and loved ethanol was the one who won our primary. This wasn’t the guy to nominate if you were opposed to ethanol subsidies.

“I like the Ford Fusion Hybrid, I will say.”

Why do you like it. Seriously. I have not owned a hybrid but that propulsion system seems like a nice idea, and the Prius has been a success long enough that it can’t be a flash in the pan.

And if you want something with more range:

Acura 2017 NSX Hybrid

I've driven the RLX Hybrid sedan that has essentially the same system (albeit the engine is in the front, and the pair of electric motors are in the back). In “sport” mode, the thing launches like a bat out of hell.

There are “green hybrids” and “performance hybrids”, with the one you tested falling into the latter category...:^)

The greenie hybrid ones, that are not really designed for performance, can be identified from the list -

https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/carpool/carpool.htm

Note that my comments are for hybrids only, not the all-electric cars.
