Cole’s wife Linda thought that a move to Los Angeles would be a good idea, as she was tiring of New York. Thanks to the advent of sound in the movies, musicals were becoming trendy, and a number of composers of the Great American Songbook had decamped to California. Cole signed with MGM and moved to Tinseltown. Linda soon found that she had made a mistake.

The Hollywood film community had a vibrant homosexual subculture with pool parties populated by half naked men being a major draw. Before Mayor Fletcher Bowron and Police Chief Tom Parker cleaned up the city, homosexual nightlife thrived as long as an envelope of cash was delivered on a regular basis to the LAPD. Cole rather liked the atmosphere, but his blatant homosexual liaisons offended Linda, who left for Paris.

This 1936 film was Cole’s first movie for Louie B. Mayer, whom Cole resented for his tendency to micro-manage. It starred Eleanor Powell of the famous high kick, Jimmy Stewart and Buddy Ebsen among others.

ELEANOR POWELL: “RAP, TAP ON WOOD”

This is a clip form the movie. Eleanor only gets off a few of her famous high kicks, and this is primarily a tap dance number, which Eleanor executes with panache. The lyrics give it away immediately as a Cole Porter tune.

Frances was eventually to become a radio star when teamed with Don Ameche on “The Bickersons,” which is still funny after 65 years. She had a small role in “Born to Dance,” and she got a hit out of this song on her own.
