Trump likely just infuriated China with the US’s first call to Taiwan since 1979

President-elect Donald Trump spoke with the president of Taiwan by phone on Friday, in a move likely to infuriate Beijing and hinder US-China relations.

"President-elect Trump spoke with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, who offered her congratulations," according to a readout of the call released by Trump's transition team.

"During the discussion, they noted the close economic, political, and security ties" between Taiwan and the United States, the statement continued. "President-elect Trump also congratulated President Tsai on becoming President of Taiwan earlier this year."

The call, first reported by the Financial Times, is the first time a US president has directly spoken with Taiwan's leadership in more than 30 years.

The US suspended formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979 after establishing a One China position — which states that "there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China" — in an effort to establish diplomatic channels with Beijing.

Beijing views Taiwan as a province of China, whereas Taiwan — which has its own democratically elected government — has a more complicated view of the nations' relationship.

Ing-wen, who was elected the first female president of Taiwan in May, told The Washington Post over the summer that she hopes Chinese President Xi Jinping "can appreciate that Taiwan is a democratic society in which the leader has to follow the will of the people."

Analysts were quick to point out that the phone call will likely infuriate Beijing.

"Trump has phone call w Taiwan President, 1st by US Pres or Pres-elect since 1979," goepolitical expert Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, tweeted on Friday. "Beijing will be absolutely incensed."

China might not have been too happy with the social call, but I’d guess some Taiwanese got a little sunshine for a change.

Taiwan has been our friends for many years. Back in 1968 those of us in a command that was involved in SPECOPS covert missions were given flights to CCK Taiwan for a few days out of country. The planes were solid black C-130’s and they departed Saigon and then landed in Taiwan’s capitol before going to CCK for maintenance. The Chinese on Taiwan are long time allies.

Sounds like good memories, Jim !

My dad was a MMPO2 on the Stoddard (DD566) during Korea, but mainly stationed in the Med.

Screw China, who has stolen at least 10 million middle class jobs in manufacturing from US, beginning with China’s admission in WTO.

It was a couple of weeks ago that the President of Japan hopped on a jet to NY for a meeting with Trump.

Yeah, he did hot foot it over to Trump Tower ASAP. Didn’t he? LOL.

Exactly. I can’t tell if the MSM is being disingenuous when they express outrage at Trump’s so-called “impulsive” tweets in the middle of the night.

We could make an amazing list of things the MSM didn’t get outraged about during the kenyan’s occupation of the White House.

Exactly. I remember back in the 80s/90s when the libs were squealing about the “sweat shops” in foreign countries. I guess that was before they found out they could line their pockets with lobby money.

They/we just used them to haul in teams whose nationality/uniform was not to be seen in Vietnam, add some unusual cargo, special supplies, and we got a third R&R if we won one of these trips or got a slot from our unit.

First shot across the bow.

Probably one of the best ways to send the message to China. One phone call, at no monetary cost, which is loud and clear.

The next best could be to have a lunch with Dalai Lama at White House.

Plus, SHE called HIM, so the press can just settle down. China’s pssd, but of one thing you can be sure — MOST world leaders RESPECT a president who is STRONG, which Trump is. They have gotten the message, LOUD AND CLEAR. After 8 years of the mealy mouth in chief circling the globe and telling the entire world how terrible (weak) we are, which I’m sure puzzled everyone from Putin to Abe, they now understand they have a REAL leader to deal with.

Yep, flew them for many years starting in 1979 so I knew a number of the guys from Nha Trang. BTW, those birds were updated and continued to be SOF workhorses till they got retired in 2013. The paint was changed to dark grey in the late 1980s.

There will be tens of thousands of young Chinese who will not be going back if China doesn’t reform its communist government.

Trump is correct...we have sold Taiwan weapons for decades. China knows we would step in and help defend the island. But a phone call is going to upset the apple cart??

“These liberal geniuses just can’t figure out Trump and his Deplorable voters/supporters.”

They will still be confused after Trump’s second term as Potus and Pence’s eight years.

“Since Jimmah threw Taiwan under the bus.”

Carter, the Opecker Princes’ president and the ChiCom’s president, threw a lot of good allies under the bus.
