MOSCOW: Vladimir Putin on Friday (Dec 2) told artists not to confuse freedom of expression with "outrageously dangerous behaviour" and suggested the Charlie Hebdo massacre could have been avoided if the magazine had not insulted Islam.
The Russian President told members of the artistic community not to "divide society" during a televised debate with theatre and screen star Yevgeny Mironov who voiced concerns about growing restrictions on artistic freedom in Russia.
The Russian strongman said there was a "very subtle line between what I would call dangerously outrageous behaviour and creative freedom".
"It's a very subtle thing, a very subtle line. It depends on a feeling of tact, from all of us: officialdom on the one hand and people in creative professions on the other," he said.
"Those activists - I'm speaking approximately - at Charlie Hebdo's offices, they came and shot people. The question is, did those cartoonists have to insult Muslim believers?" Putin said of the 2015 attack by militants on the French satirical magazine that left 12 dead.

Yes. Don’t use lead based paint.
Vincent van Danger beware
Putin is wrong on this in my opinion.
He’s wrong a lot.
Like with helping Iran with their nuclear program, for instance.
Putin needs to retire.
The guy is losing it.
I like that Putin. He likes Trump. Ah can see into his soul.
“warns” is a misleading word for the title...
but it made me look
so....fake....news...
But of course he is. Sometimes he is right though. However, Obama opened the door for their nuclear involvement. Then again we really do not know his motivation for helping Iran. It may be to thwart them in the long run, though it certainly looks like a monetary thing.
That being said Putin & Russia would be much better off if they allied with the U.S., which of course, was not going to happen under Obama. Putin may just be smart enough to realize this fact. Time will tell I guess.
Putin was helping Iran with their nuclear program long before Hussein’s nuke deal disaster.
But yeah, let’s hope for a American-Russo alliance against both the Sunni and Shiite regional nutjobs.
While that is true that they were helping before Obama’s deal, it was go nowhere fast. Now it has been moved unto a much faster track.
Yeah, sure. Dictators don’t retire.
“Then again we really do not know his motivation for helping Iran. It may be to thwart them in the long run, though it certainly looks like a monetary thing.”
Iran has been a client state of Russia for decades, why would he want to thwart them?
>>”That being said Putin & Russia would be much better off if they allied with the U.S.,”<<
Agree with that.
But Putin has already said that while he’d like to see US-Russia relations restored, he has set conditions for doing so. One of which is he wants the US to not make unilateral decision on global issues. Also, Russia has her own interests which most definitely will not always be the same as those of the US.
Also, it’d be very difficult to fully restore those relations if, for example, new laws are passed by the US about the so-called “Russian Propaganda”, which presumably would include Russian news outlets such as RT....
To keep them from getting to powerful. It's a balancing act that has to be carried out with precision.
Agreed...
Gonna be interesting when Trump trolls him. Lol. Think the main point here is if you tweek someone with art, just to tweek them, you should expect them to get tweeked. That was what happened when they were tweeked here in Dallas with the art contest. And thank God the police were ready for them. It is actually a weakness within Islam. You can direct them and control their actions by tweeking or trolling. Putin obviously does not want all out war with Islam. He is outnumbered 10 to 1.
I don’t know which Russian artists should fear more. Pissed of Muslims or a pissed off Putin - Defender of Islam.
I think Putin has other reasons to ban jokes. Reminds me of this:
A Soviet judge walks out of his chambers laughing his head off. A colleague approaches him and asks why he is laughing. “I just heard the funniest joke in the world!” “Well, go ahead, tell me!” says the other judge. “I can’t I just gave someone ten years for it!”
He is insulting me right now. does that make me some kind of loon? Is he suggesting to make laws to this effect or is he suggesting to cut out some of the harshness in criticism?
