The White House (Obama) Says Women Should Be Required to Register for the Military Draft
NY Mag ^

The White House and the Pentagon on Thursday respectively announced support for requiring women in the U.S. to register for the military draft when they turn 18, USA Today reports.

The announcement makes Barack Obama the first president since Jimmy Carter to endorse universal registration for the Selective Service. The White House previously was pretty neutral on the subject, but in a new statement to USA Today, Ned Price, a spokesman for the National Security Council, revealed the administration had changed its stance:

“As old barriers for military service are being removed, the administration supports — as a logical next step — women registering for the Selective Service.”

The Pentagon echoed Obama’s support, with spokesman Peter Cook saying in a statement, “It makes sense for women to register for Selective Service just as men must.”

The statement came the day before the House of Representatives is set to vote on a defense bill that would remove a provision that passed the Senate to add women to the draft, according to USA Today. Instead, a compromise version wants a commission to investigate whether women should be included in the Selective Service or if the draft should even exist.

Obama apparently supports an all-volunteer military force and has no intention to reinstate the draft. Instead, the White House hopes to demonstrate gender equality in the armed services and to foster a sense of public service by requiring women to register.

Yeah, they so believe it that they ran away from it for eight years. That’s real leadership.

Send them to the front lines. Whatever the U.S. version of the Eastern Front is!

Sadly too many people don’t realize (and the age of “nation building” and “spreading democracy” has poisoned minds) but the military to to protect our home- that is our country, our families, and our women, as women are the bearers of our future. I guess the libtards would think that all patriarchal and old fashioned, but from a standpoint of survival it is the truth.

As a woman you should know these left wing folks are NUTS.

They want women serving in combat on the front lines, getting captured and raped. All in the name of ‘gender equality.’

Yep. We can help the best way we can. But not on the front line. If I had to kill to save my family, that’s something entirely different. But the gov trying to turn us into men......nope.

I objected to the title of the article.

We haven’t had a ‘draft’, where people were called up and had to serve (if they couldn’t ‘get out’) since VN times.

We have a volunteer army now. You register at 18, in the *event* of a draft.

It may be just semantics, but the title of the article was very possibly and unnecessarily frightening.

(I don’t believe that women should be required to register, if that’s your concern. Women don’t belong in combat.)

They ‘get off’ on rape which is why. Totally depraved.

Sure. Let ‘em register, just like men do. Let ‘em know that if they want the government goodies, scholarships, welfare, etc., they have to put themselves at risk like the guys.

Nothing says they actually have to be drafted.

We used it to flip young women voters with the meme campaign hitting college boards.

Even Scott Adams gave us props on the campaign.

I have to say drafting Miley Cyrus and Lena Dunham doesn’t sound TOO terrible

How wonderfully old fashioned a sentiment, my poor unenlightened man! But seriously, I could never fight and need a man to fight for me, that is all.

I believe they should have to register along with the men for 2 reasons. 1. As long as the silliness continues of trying to put women into infantry, artillery, Special Ops units, they should have to register because we don’t want to discriminate now do we? 2. It would put to bed any argument over the 2nd amendment as the definition of a militia is: “a. part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency b. a body of citizens organized for military service.” Now going with that definition, anyone able bodied person over the age of 18 who registers for selective service is in fact, part of a militia. Just my two cents.

they should register, they are fully equal citizens.

now the armed forces can decide if and how they decide to call them up, and where to put them.

I find this to be The Issue that gets a lot of fence sitters stirred up. The sort of hipster-conservatives I know don’t like this at all. They lean towards conservativism but will overlook issues for personal convience (like shopping at Target) This one thing gets them all stirred up for their daughters.
I have mixed feelings about the whole issue myself but I think it will drive a group of people over the fence and into becoming true conservatives.

I really dont know. When waaaaay back when I was a college guy before I thought about anything from a consistent worldview, there really was not any one issue that pushed me into conservatism. It was a way of thinking and having unchanging core values that supported all the other beliefs for other arguments on top of them.

Maybe some, people do get pushed that way by one issue, but i think thats how you get rinos and gopers, for ex fiscal conservative, liberal social issues. Which if they were a real conservative they would see the hypocrisy/paradox of holding such a conflicting worldview.
