Trump was at the Carrier plant talking about how he got involved in keeping it open. It happened because he saw a young man who worked at the plant on the evening news. He was asked by a news interviewer what he was going to do after the plant closed and the guy said the plant wasn't closing. (And Trump says to himself...geez the poor guy doesn't even know his factory is closing.) Then back to the interview, the kid says "the plant's not closing because Donald Trump said it wouldn't and he was going to stop it from closing and I believe Donald Trump, I've been with him from the beginning and I trust him." (that's a paraphrase) And Trump says "I NEVER SAID THAT!...and then they showed the tape where I said that..."
I'm sure it will be replayed on Lou Dobbs tonight because it was classic Trump.
Trump's point was that when he said that he wasn't specifically talking about Carrier, he used Carrier as a metaphor for other plant closings. He thought Carrier was a done deal but that kid on the news made him get it in gear!

CNN was very impressed with his speech. Girl said that is why his voters love him with his extraneous speaking. You could tell she was impressed and quieted the criticism of the others.
