(CNN)President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Elaine Chao, the former labor secretary and wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to be his choice for transportation secretary, an official briefed on the matter told CNN on Tuesday.
The announcement is expected to come this afternoon. Chao served as secretary of labor under President George W. Bush from 2001 through 2009 -- the longest tenure in the position since World War II -- and has been married to McConnell since 1993. She was the first Asian-American woman to serve in a Cabinet position.
Chao also served as the deputy secretary of transportation under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1991. Following her time in government, Chao has held a position as a distinguished fellow at the Heritage Foundation in addition to conducting media appearances.
At the Transportation Department, Chao would have a key role in helping Trump get an infrastructure spending bill passed through Congress and start government-backed works projects -- a role likely to be complicated by her relationship with McConnell, who will also be a critical player in any infrastructure bill negotiations.

I think I’m better off just not reading these cabinet announcements...
She is definitely part of the swamp. As Sec.of Labor under Bush she tried to screw with people’s Overtime. This is NOT good news.
This choice doesn’t have everyone at FR against it..so that is something.
Romney , on the other hand, will have massive opposition.
But we don’t count.
Taiwan is sort of an anti-Mainland China connection.
yeah but you have to question her judgment. She sleeps with him.
“I think Im better off just not reading these cabinet announcements...”
Ditto
She was a Deputy Secretary of Transportation under the first President Bush, so this nomination isn't outlandish. I'm less concerned about her spouse than I am about her long tenure inside the Beltway -- but I'm impressed that Trump hired an MBA for this role instead of a lawyer or a career politician.
I work on major transportation projects myself, and Chao's nomination reinforces some very interesting rumors I'm hearing around the industry about Trump's agenda for the nation's infrastructure. It sounds like Wall Street and innovative financing arrangements are going to play an enormous role in his infrastructure investment plan.
I agree with you on both counts!
Well Mitch you can retire now
Should not be a cabinet position anyway ... Ignore it. Better yet, kill it administratively.
But yes, this does “feed the (Senate) pig”. Again.
“Not sure what to make of this.”
Betrayed.
maybe!!! Unless you KNOW, you don’t know what folks do in the privacy of their own home.
What track record does Chao have that makes you think she’s a RINO? I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but she’s never held elected office and has worked for some very conservative think tanks in D.C.
What political payback appointments? This is the first GOPe I’ve seen. Sessions, Price, the gal for CMS
Just breathe already....plus this is a nothing burger appointment
No one ever said Love had to make sense.
Not an ideal situation, but it's realpolitik - making the best of a usually bad situation.
This one kills a few birds with one stone: Asian, female, McConnell’s beard, etc. LOL.
She fixed labor and now transport is on deck.
how many bridges has she built ? retread time, payback time? puke time.. we need to get Mitch back home for good,, sitting next to her on the porch..
Yep, that alone should be cause for alarm!
