Trump picks Elaine Chao for transportation secretary
CNN ^ | 11/29/2016 | Phil Mattingly

Posted on 11/29/2016 8:22:31 AM PST by usafa92

(CNN)President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Elaine Chao, the former labor secretary and wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to be his choice for transportation secretary, an official briefed on the matter told CNN on Tuesday.

The announcement is expected to come this afternoon. Chao served as secretary of labor under President George W. Bush from 2001 through 2009 -- the longest tenure in the position since World War II -- and has been married to McConnell since 1993. She was the first Asian-American woman to serve in a Cabinet position.

Chao also served as the deputy secretary of transportation under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1991. Following her time in government, Chao has held a position as a distinguished fellow at the Heritage Foundation in addition to conducting media appearances.

At the Transportation Department, Chao would have a key role in helping Trump get an infrastructure spending bill passed through Congress and start government-backed works projects -- a role likely to be complicated by her relationship with McConnell, who will also be a critical player in any infrastructure bill negotiations.

As long as he doesn’t blow it by allowing the Senate to recess.

Please call the Capitol at (202)224-3121 and remind Ditch that if he lets the Senate recess, BO WILL appoint Garland as a recess appointment. Let him know we’re paying attention.

I think you’re going to see some interesting, innovative ideas come out of this administration about financing infrastructure very differently than we do now.

“Aww, I’m so sad for you. Trump proves he is brilliant strategically & hires great people to work for him”

Please tell me the same thing if he picks uber RINO establishment hack, Trump-hater Romney as Sec of Defense.

Hmmm....I think we are safe from that happening as Mittens hasn’t been mentioned as SoD.

Very true. But Trump is the president-elect, so all Americans want him to do well. What you say is true, but the primaries ended several months ago.

I am one of those Americans who wants him to do well but I want him to do well in those things which were important during the primaries and which he promised during the primaries that he would do if elected.

The principles which were important in the primaries did not evaporate into the ether simply because an election conducted for those principles is now over.

I agree with yoiu,. and we should hold Trump’s feet to the fire, as we don with any other official. But at this point, there is no pint in re-litigating the primaries.

One of his skills is picking the right people for the job.
In his new role he is having lots of outside pressure to pick people for political reasons, not just competence.
Chao at Transportation isn’t particularly bad.

Romney at State would be a particularly bad choice.

I don’t like Elaine Chao being in the cabinet.

But that scandal is nonsense.

There are real reasons to not like this pick. Not fake scandal.

And I agree with you.

But I thought one of the principles we were fighting for in this election was to defeat crony capitalism, to disempower the elites in Washington, to dethrone the uni-party, and drain the swamp.

I also rather thought that it was commonly accepted here that one of the most repugnant swamp things, one of the most blatant practitioner of crony capitalism, the archetypal elitist and the worst sellout to the uni-party was Mitch McConnell.

I thought we nominated and then elected Donald Trump as an incorruptible non-politician who would slay the dragons.

This is simply my way of "holding Trump's feet to the fire" as you suggest.

I wish all the whiners would shut up. You think a President Elect Cruz would be doing any better at this point? Really?

Slightly agree.

What I am seriously hoping is that Trump will initiate enough investigations to drain the swamp. I think there are WAY TOO MANY politicians who are being blackmailed. I can’t think of any other reason why drips like McConnell and Boehner would roll over and hand 0vomit everything he wants.

Perhaps Trump knows their secrets and can also pull their levers. That would be a first good step. But even better would be to get rid of anyone with a dirty secret and surround himself with people of integrity and principle.

Why play what if?

My point is not so much about Ted Cruz but about the hypocrisy which always seems to find a way to rationalize what our favorite Paladin, whoever he is at the moment, does.

Please see my reply #133.

How is Trump going to get Turtle Head unnominated for Senate Majority leader? What did you want him to do?
