When people speak of Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote, they are really speaking about California. In that state, Hillary Clinton won 6,621,346 votes to Donald Trump's 3,549,576 as of this writing. This margin of over three million votes alone accounts for any claim that Clinton exceeded Trump in popular support.
Consider some numbers. In New York, Trump won 37.5% of the vote; in New Jersey, Trump won over 40%; and in Illinois, Trump won 39.4%. Among sizably populated states that lean "overwhelmingly" Democrat, California is in a class by itself. Trump struggled to get even a third of Californian votes.
Moreover, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois differ markedly from California because their tilt toward the Democrats happens on a very different landscape. New York and Illinois are pushed into deep blue territory by singular metro areas (NYC and Chicago), which overpower small-town areas ("upstate" or "downstate") where Republicans gather in strong numbers. New Jersey is wedged between the Democratic machine cities of Philadelphia and New York City and has a smattering of medium-sized urban centers with large black populations.
Only in California does one find a vast state with a huge population (nearly 40 million people) with multiple sprawling metro areas that all lean strongly Democratic or, at best (in the case of San Diego), just libertarian enough to be less than completely left wing. The San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Palm Springs, Long Beach, etc. stretch across miles and miles of a complex and diverse landscape, hosting a stunning multiplicity of races and ethnicities. Yet everywhere you go in the state, you seem to find Democrats or Republicans who just don't strike you as all that conservative.
California is a different country.

Absolutely, at least the southern half.
I sure hope any Californians seeking asylum in the US are fully vetted before being allowed to regain US Citizenship.
Even without illegals voting in California Hillary still wins that state comfortably. What do you expect from a state that voted to ban plastic bags?
Ours has become the ‘stupid state’.
In the '60s, many tried to start communes to live the "philosophical good life" and they quickly discovered that there were too many leeches who wanted to reap the rewards of others' labors w/o producing anything of their own - one would think it would have served as a wake up call but stupid is as stupid does, over and over again....
YES. I agree. Let them go.
California does not have the moral or legal justification to secede.
“Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed”. - Declaration of Independence (DofI).
The DofI may be the best outline ever created to justify secession. A state can’t just up and say, “OK were outta here.” Individuals may leave, but not a state must have more than “transient causes” to overthrow its governance.
“But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.” - DofI.
Where is the “long train of abuses” CA has suffered? Where has CA gone on record to show how it has suffered “a long train” of unconstitutional federal acts, the ONLY legal justification for secession?
Let them secede. Laugh when they beg for foreign aid. Don’t accept immigration back into the US...you wanted it, you stay and make it work.
Then we can take it back when the already growing number of volcanoes and earthquakes drops half of it into the Pacific, make it back into a reasonable state again.
It’s coming I think. Geological activity growing all around the “ring of fire”...Japan, Chile, the rumblings are started, I just hope Yellowstone doesn’t join the party...it’s overdue, so is the San Andreas fault, not to mention the other minor faults in the area. And with the coming solar minimum...if I lived there I’d be moving out as fast as I could before it all goes to hell in a handbasket...
Even the People’s Republic of Oregon went 41% Trump.
When we lived for a while in the Bay area, I was repeatedly struck with the thought that even though the people around me were speaking English (most of them anyway), what they were saying made it clear that we did not live in the same country. That was not just true when the topic turned to politics; it was true about almost everything.
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a different country.
The Idaho Panhandle is a different country.
The Ozarks are a different country.
Lahaina (on the island of Maui) is a different country.
The Bayou is a different country.

Regards,
Same with NY and NYC.
Texans would be happy to contribute to building a wall around CA. Those Communist-leaning voters are moving into Texas after fouling their own nest, and we are sick of it.
One has to wonder how long it would be before California became Mexico again if it were to succeed.
Let em go but they have to leave all military bases as part of the US.

Years ago, Colorado had “Don’t Californicate Colorado” bumper stickers.
The fornicators won, and Colorado went for the ignorant slut.
However, if we can manage to destroy Denver and Boulder, the great state will once again raise its IQ and resume its place as a state of beauty.
Sometimes, when one has cancer, the treatment to save the person is the surgically remove the tumor. Removing much of the coastal areas of California, but not San Diego or the red interior, would be such a surgery for the US. I’m all for it. The remaining US could become healthy again, and the tumor, well, who cares what happens to it.
