There is understandable fear in the land among many African American and Latino families about a Donald Trump presidency.
Its not just incidents of racism and hate; its what his policies will mean for their well-being and for their children. So its a good time for a new study out this month that shows how much ground black and Latino children have to make up in California.
Many of the biggest racial disparities are in education, according to the scorecard compiled by Children Now, an advocacy group based in Oakland. For example, in Sacramento County, while 49 percent of white third-graders read at grade level, only 26 percent of Latino students and 22 percent of African American students do. And while 44 percent of white eighth-graders meet state standards in math, just 22 percent of Latinos and 16 percent of African Americans do.
The racial gap is evident even in wealthier counties. In San Francisco, for instance, while 73 percent of white third-graders read at grade level, only 30 percent of Latino students and 16 percent of African American students do. And the differences are even bigger across counties. A paltry 23 percent of black third-graders in Fresno County read at grade level, but 65 percent do in El Dorado County.

No.........
The goal should be to raise them ALL.
What’s a “racial gap”? Is that the gap between blacks that drop out and whites that graduate??
They don't want to "fix their problem", they just want more $$$ to continue to pretend to try to fix it.
“a very significant IQ distribution difference between Blacks and the other two races”
Bingo! Spot on! And nothing can be done about that.
“That is going to be up to the States to decide, that is where the Education is going back to... He might have just appointed someone to over see the Education in our country, but it will be a short lived job... There will be NO COMMON CORE...other than that, the States will have their say in education...”
I hope you are right about that, HarleyLady. The Dept. of Ed. should be shut down, all the employees sent home, and the building and furnishings sold. And then the federal behemoth should stop all education spending, which is what they use to dictate to local and state governments what type of social experiments to conduct and what kind of deviancy to teach. If the feds can’t “withhold funds” because they are out of the education spending business altogether, they can’t lead local authorities around by the nose.
Nobody wants to talk about the real problem, even conservatives. I have heard many sad stories about inner city schools where the kids are running wild — working their phones rather than paying attention in class, assaulting other students, using the F-word to teachers, and bringing false allegations against them. If a teacher tries discipline that was accepted decades ago, the teacher is discharged, reamed-out by the parents, or led away in handcuffs. For their part, republicans tend to blame it all on the teachers.
Research shows that brain development between birth and age 5 is crucial for long term educational achievement. Unless Trump plans to take a significant portion of the population’s offspring from them at birth and put them with different parents, then it will be difficult to bridge the gap.
The current approach to teaching preschoolers needs to trickle up (play-based learning. Heavy on imagination and hands-on activities.) What I have observed going on in kindergarten through third grade is not going to bridge any gaps. The same folks who learned before will still learn because parents will make up for the deficits left by common core.
Trump can always look to success stories in Africa for ideas.
Parents? No big government fixes.
School choice — vouchers, charter schools, etc. CAN help those who are not afraid to ‘’act white’’.
state control will be no saving grace as these lawmakers get bought off by corporate ed interests or seduced by the Gulenists (Turks)—burn the whole damn thing down and tell parents to educate their own.
Too late. They're already doing that.
The schools are lousy. Teaching kids gender propaganda instead of math.
It’s worldwide
The IQ gap was seen in the Irish and Jewish kids in 1900, and was the reason for the eugenics movement.
yes it is partly culture. Ou neighbor in the US was beaten up for acting white because he studied. And I had teachers who passed my adopted sons despite bad teasts because they were Hispanic.
but despite Obama and his propaganda machine, what you don’t hear that statistics show things are improving, partly because of the growing black middle class, and partly due to African and West Indian immigrants who do have middle class values.
“The goal should be to raise them ALL.”
True, but it also has to be a shared goal. Students have to take responsibility for their education. Show up, pay attention and do the work. Parents have to be interested and encourage success and teachers have to teach rather than police or indoctrinate.
Mandatory education needs to stop, if a student doesn’t want to follow the rules, they should be expelled instead of made to come to class only to disrupt the opportunity for others to learn. Put them out on the streets where the law enforcement community can deal with them. That’s where they’re going to end up anyway.
Different cultures view education differently. Are all these students being taught by white racists? Please dont mention Asians. They ruin all the left wing arguments. Also do not mention IQ distribution. That is taboo. You will be visited by the PC Police and sent to a reeducation camp. 75 years ago when racism was more prevalent black literacy rates were much higher. Why not narrow racial gaps on the basketball court? Can Trump make a Dachshund outrun a Greyhound? Yes. Surgically shorten the Greyhounds legs. Teaching colleges have thoroughly indoctrinated the teachers. Destigmatize acting white or perhaps tell kids to act Asian. The left will continue beating this dead horse in order to get more money. It has just about outlasted its usefulness.
