Conventional wisdom tells us that the electoral college requires that the person who lost the popular vote this year must nonetheless become our president. That view is an insult to our framers. It is compelled by nothing in our Constitution. It should be rejected by anyone with any understanding of our democratic traditions most important, the electors themselves.
The framers believed, as Alexander Hamilton put it, that the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the [president]. But no nation had ever tried that idea before. So the framers created a safety valve on the peoples choice. Like a judge reviewing a jury verdict, where the people voted, the electoral college was intended to confirm or not the peoples choice. Electors were to apply, in Hamiltons words, a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice and then decide. The Constitution says nothing about winner take all. It says nothing to suggest that electors freedom should be constrained in any way. Instead, their wisdom about whether to overrule the people or not was to be free of political control yet guided by democratic values. They were to be citizens exercising judgment, not cogs turning a wheel.
Many think we should abolish the electoral college... What if the people elect a Manchurian candidate? Or a child rapist? What if evidence of massive fraud pervades a close election? It is a useful thing to have a body confirm the results of a democratic election so long as that body exercises its power reflectively and conservatively. Rarely if ever should it veto the peoples choice. And if it does, it needs a very good reason.

Why are people this stupid given a voice?
What the heck is this pathological adoration of an out and out monster? A really sick monster at that. I understand the “getting your own ox gored” etc. But is a bit of material wealth really worth your soul? Really? Money is that important? I just don’t get it (and yeah, I’d like a new new truck, but geez, I’m not going to kill some child to get one).
The Constitution doesn’t “let the Electoral College” choose the winner willy-nilly. The final leg of that process is the certification of the vote by the JOINT Session of Congress of a valid vote. All this is explained at archives.gov blah blah....
“What if evidence of massive fraud pervades a close election?”
Like California sending illegitimate votes. Our Electors offer a safeguard against that.
What scum these people are. GET RID OF THE ELECTORAL!!! NO WAIT!!! THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE CAN SAVE US!!!
But it’s not fair. We should let voters in California and New York pick our President because clearly they know what is best for us.
/sarcasm
A “Manchurian Candidate”? You mean like Bammy?
Lol....unintentionally hilarious.
Hahhhhvahhhd!

People like this have forever besmirched Academia and the “Ivy league”, which used to be RESPECTED.

Why does anyone print this crap?
3.5 million according to what TrueTheVote said a few weeks ago. Since voting seems to be still underway in California, the total foreign vote will continue to mount.
The level of lunacy is off the charts.
This is all starting to sound like an interview with Charles Manson, if you’ve ever heard one.
These people all have “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and are shouting to each other in an echo chamber.
Listen at your own peril.
I will continue to hope and to pray that we have avoided civil war . . . for now. The author seems to be hoping otherwise.
...and under-populated states should only have one senator. Ignorant journalists that don’t understand that this is the United States of America and not a country called Kalifornia-New York.
