According to the New York Post, the Obamas have reportedly purchased a house in Rancho Mirage, California, the same town to which President Gerald Ford retired after he left the White House.
The golf destination is also home to Sunnylands, the former Annenberg estate known as "Camp David of the West." The Desert Sun, the area's local daily newspaper, speculated in January that the Obamas were considering buying property in Thunderbird Heights, where houses on the market that month ranged from $1.39 million to $5 million.
Michael S. Smith, who decorated the White House for the Obamas and whose partner, James Costos, is the ambassador to Spain and Andorra, has a house in the neighborhood that the President has visited.

Why not trade their house in Chicago and trade for a house on the south side of Chicago and bring peace there?

Eight years ago, they were living in a house that didn’t have their name on the deed so was likely loaned to them to use until bigger things along and the reason he hasn’t been back. Today, they supposedly own four houses and leasing a fifth. All on a 400k/yr salary. Hellary must have given him stock tips or he’s been getting kickbacks.
Obama just happened to appoint Smith’s boyfriend the ambassadorship. What else did Bathhouse Barry get out of the deal than decorating tips?

Not confirmed (I own a house there and winter there), and I know they originally wanted Thunderbird but they said no - too many security issues according to a reliable source. Last I heard they were looking in Kolarama near Anneberg estate but the city has denied it.
either way, if they are there - there goes the neighborhood.

Real-estate site Zillow claims this property sold on July 30, 2014 for $3,406,000.

However, the Los Angeles Times claimed on August 26, 2014:
A contemporary home on 3.29 acres in Rancho Mirage that was identified as a likely Obama purchase sold to a couple from Nebraska.
