Republicans Divided Between Romney and Giuliani for Secretary of State
NY Times ^ | Nov. 24, 2016 | JEREMY W. PETERS and MAGGIE HABERMAN

Posted on 11/24/2016 7:30:25 PM PST by Innovative

Rival factions of Republicans are locked in an increasingly caustic and public battle to influence President-elect Donald J. Trump’s choice for secretary of state, leaving a prominent hole in an otherwise quickly formed national security team that is unlikely to be filled until next week at the earliest.

The debate inside Mr. Trump’s wide circle of formal and informal advisers — pitting supporters of one leading contender, Mitt Romney, against those of another, Rudolph W. Giuliani — has led to the kind of dramatic airing of differences that characterized Mr. Trump’s unconventional and often squabbling campaign team. And it traces the outlines of the enduring split in the Republican Party between establishment figures who scoffed at Mr. Trump’s chances of victory and the grass-roots insurgents who backed him as a disrupter of the Washington power structure.

The most publicly vocal faction has been the group opposed to Mr. Romney, which has questioned whether he would be loyal after his searing criticism of Mr. Trump during the campaign. But Mr. Trump himself has told aides that he believes Mr. Romney “looks the part” and would make a fine secretary of state, a senior Trump official said on Thursday. Mr. Trump, who is always difficult to read and is capable of changing his mind at any minute, has also praised Mr. Giuliani in recent conversations with acquaintances.

I don’t think Romney would be fired if he took the job. The key thing Trump will be looking at is who can best do the job working with all these foreign turds. Not pushing Romney necessarily but I have no doubt he could do that job well and sell anything including Trump. He has great teeth also.

No one wants Romney as SoS.

That’s just as good as saying I want Obama as SoS.

Trump isn’t picking that pos buffoon.

Giuliani is 10000 times better as a choice.

So is Bolton. Or Newt.

I admit biased in favor of Rudy but the other 2 will be just fine.

I’ll throw up if romney gets any position other than toilet cleaner.

Oh, because Iraq was such a bad decision? They still have control of their country. They aren’t trying to kill us like the Iranians. They endure a lot but still have real elections. I’d say they’re light years ahead of most of the Middle East. I don’t think all those casualties Americans suffered and the liberals cheered, were for nothing.

And yeah, I don’t believe the conventional wisdom about Iraq. I haven’t succumbed to the liberal news brainwashing.

Consider Rudy, Duncan Hunter (Sr.), Marsha Blackburn, Jindal, Alan Keyes.

Alan Keyes didn’t support Trump, but Keyes would be much better than Romney. Romney should not be on the list after he degraded Trump over and over. If they are considering Romney, Mr. Keyes should be on the list too. But I’m hoping Mr. Trump knows not to trust Romney.

Ole Erick Erickson is now pushing Romney...

Erick Erickson Verified account ‏@EWErickson
Erick Erickson
Yet as SecState he’d provide some stability and a calming effect internationally. Trump would be smart to do it.

I forgot to put Bolton in the list. He should be at or near the top.

Not just no, but Hell No! There is only one federal government position that would fit Rudy Giuliani: U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

And he becomes president when again?

Yes, you’re right. Perry should be in consideration also.

Rudy should probably be over Homeland and Security.

While Mitt was busy trying to recruit a strong 3rd party candidate (settling eventually for McMullin), Ruby was running around the country, giving speeches, attending rallies, raising funds and anything else the Trump campaign needed. Doubt that it’s even a question. Romney was a fool and I certainly hope he pays the price.

I had hoped to see Rudy at DOJ to clean up that end of the swamp, but Jeff Sessions is hard to beat. We’ll see where Rudy ends up.

Romney would be good at selling Trump to all the turds around the world. He is a great salesman and has a nice smile.

Yeah. Like the Secretary of State should come across as a crooked used car salesman!

At least Madame Secretary Hildebeest was selling crooked outcomes (over her illegal email server), not used cars! Surely, the Donald knows better!

Giuliani, Petreaus, Bolton .. superior choices. Even Governor Nikki Haley beats Mittens as a SoS candidate!

Keyes for something, preferably something big. So yes, sounds good. He knows about law and don’t want him contained at the Supreme Court but he might be good for that too.
