California's secession: Could Christmas come early for the rest of us?
American Thinker ^ | November 23, 2016 | Ed Straker

Posted on 11/23/2016 4:31:17 AM PST by NYer

"Should California become a free, sovereign, and independent country?"

The question could appear on a statewide ballot in 2018 if a group of secessionists has its way.

Marcus Evans, the vice president of Yes California, filed a proposed ballot measure with the Attorney General's Office on Monday that would appear on the November 2018 gubernatorial ballot.

If voters approve the measure, it would establish a special election in March 2019 to ask voters again if they want California to become an independent country, Yes California wrote in a ballot measure filing.

More than half of the registered voters in the state must participate in the special election and at least 55 percent must vote "yes" for the proposal to move forward, according to information submitted by the group. If voters approve the measure, "the governor shall carry and shepherd an application for the newly independent Republic of California to join the United Nations," they say.

Evans said the group filed the ballot proposal in response to an uptick in support in a deep-blue state following the election of Donald Trump.

You may think, what does it matter?  California can't unilaterally decide to withdraw from the Union.  But you forget, there are two legal standards: one for conservatives and one for liberals.  Conservatives are prosecuted if they choose to disregard laws or even regulations or court decisions on marriage being redefined to include same-sex couples, letting boys in girls' bathrooms, or voter ID nullification.  But liberals are held to a very different standard.  They create sanctuary cities in defiance of federal law without consequence.  They legalize narcotics, first timidly for "medical" use, then boldly for "recreational" use, despite prohibitions in federal law, and have suffered no penalty for it.

“Yes. We could follow precedent, invade California and subjugate it, then impose a Constitutional Amendment or Article V convention to politically neuter it for a decade...”

There are about 40% of us here in California who would stand with you.

Californians would pay Sacramento all the Federal taxes they were currently paying to DC. Math and logic are not your strengths are they?

In 2018? Can’t they get a wiggle on and handle this in 2017? Inquiring minds want to know.

1. Announce that Southern California will be allowed to secede on a near future date.

2. Assist any red-staters located in Southern CA to move north.

3. Don’t worry about refunds or any of that stuff; getting rid of lefttards is enough benefit in and of itself.

4. Take off and nuke the site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

You don’t allow a state to get invaded and then write it off.

Arizona, then New Mexico, then Texas.

WE repel invasions and the fruit of invasions.

The conquest of California by a foreign entity is a catastrophe which should be prevented, if at all possible at this late date, and by force if necessary.

California has enormous debt right now, and its “separate country” revenue would be insufficient to pay that. Critical thinking not your strong point?

And I don’t think those counties are economically viable on their own

I was in a cab a few years ago driving through Pacific Heights (SF) on the way to a rehearsal dinner. The cabbie was reciting the prices of the homes - $12 million, $15 million, etc, etc.

"What do these people DO to make money like that?", I asked.

"Import drugs, make porn movies, and have sex with each other", he said.

I hope you are just LARPing about letting California go.

It has enormous productive and strategic potential. The Chinese Navy would be in San Francisco Bay and San Diego in about six months after secession.

California HAS become a big, big problem, and we need a solution. But letting China take it over isn’t it.

So what is left is the major cities. Where do they go to for help? Russia, Mexico, others?

If you think about in for about a minute and a half, you will realize that an independent California would be ruled from Beijing in about six months.

California does not have the moral or legal justification to secede.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. - Declaration of Independence (DofI).

The DofI may be the best outline ever created to justify secession. A state can't just up and say, "OK were outta here." Individuals may leave, but not a state must have more than "transient causes" to overthrow its governance.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. - DofI.

Where is the "long train of abuses" CA has suffered? Where has CA gone on record to show how it has suffered "a long train" of unconstitutional federal acts, the ONLY legal justification for secession?

I am incorrect (may be thinking of LA metro) but it's definitely more then what you say.

As of 2015 it's

Non-hispanic white - 38%

hispanic (any race) - 38.8%

So they are now the plural majority in California.

Up from 4% in 1970.

US Census for California

Without US government tax payer money, Kalifornia will go under in less than six months. Without OUR money going there to pay for the millions upon millions of illegals that Kalifornia gives free stuff too, they will not have the funds to float the state, whether they join Canada or Mexico. Both of them are as broke as we are. So, let CA, OR, WA, Las Vegas, let them all leave. That would certainly make getting conservatives more easily elected when you get rid of the 55 or so Electoral votes for Kalifornia the dims and the uber-millions voting for them out there. Hillary does not win the popular vote without the illegals in Kaliforniastan voting for her. I simply do not care if all those commies leave. Go out there and put up a border fence along the border of AZ, NM, circle around to CO, Idaho, Montana and put them in their own nation with Mexico or Canada. I DON’T CARE. LET THEM LEAVE. Go, stay gone.

California, by itself is the seventh largest economy in the world. Dunno how much of it is smoke and mirrors (Kali and US government deficit spending) but we would probably miss the Peoples’ Democratic Republic of California.
We would definitely miss the ports of California.

The 2014 numbers make more sense

The census bureau is adding people to all sorts of categories

For example they show whites as 72% in 2015

Then they show whites single race only as 57%

So your comment that Hispanics are a plural majority is also incorrect. They may well become so but they aren’t yet

It wouldn’t be long before those tolerant liberals demanded to dig up the graves of the Reagans and the Nixons and have them sent back to the U.S.

Furthermore, I Wish They All Could Be California Girls ignores the LGBT community. Why can’t the girls be boys or the boys girls? Surfin’ USA is completely out of the question. They seceded. So what’s left for an anthem?
